For some time now, Triangle Electroacoustique has obviously been trying to gain a foothold in a somewhat broader market and has been focusing on so-called wireless speakers, such as the latest product, the Triangle AIO TWIN Speakers. Neat, because the amplifiers are built into the Elara speakers. And neat because you can erase the price of decent speaker cables from your budget. You won’t need them. Moving 500 miles south, I streamed the third version of the titular composition on Marseille, by Ahmad Jamal (24/96 FLAC, Jazz Village/Qobuz), which features the French singer-songwriter Mina Agossi. The Triangles reproduced Agossi’s languid soprano with no hint of coloration or spittiness. When she sings in French, I could clearly appreciate her Gallic consonants, such as the rolled r’s and extended s’s in such words as caresse and tristesse. There is another vital set of inputs. These are for the Triangle turntable. But they can also be switched to a line level input using a slider. After imbibing some of nature’s finest herbs, it was always a chore to change LPs when the tonearm reached the end of a side.

No matter how rose coloured my audio memories, sound-wise the Triangle gear stomps all over what I used to begin my audio journey. Using my iPhone, I tapped into my Tidal playlist and selected Glory to the Day by the late Jesse Winchester, and was anchored in my listening chair by the Elara’s musically communicative nature. Though more solid and energetic than any rival we’ve heard, the Triangles are not quite the finished sonic article. Above the lowest notes, the basses had a nice growly breathiness, as did the cellos. The nostalgic waltz theme sounded delectable as played on Les Siècles’ period violins, their gut strings producing a beautifully sweet tone. I also loved the way the Elaras conveyed the clear, ringing tone of the small-bore brasses. Compact and stylish but with the class-leading sound quality you’d expect from Triangle, the Triangle LN01A are premium active speakers.As this is an active speaker set, the left speaker is equipped with 2 x 50w Class-D amplification. The right speaker is passive and is driven by the left via a supplied speaker cord. The two speakers have standard binding posts, so you should, in theory, be able to use any speaker wire, however, the manual recommends to use only the included wire. Bluetooth circuitry is built into the Elara speakers. This supports the aptX codec for Android devices and SBC for iPhones. The feature set of my in-laws’ Totem Kin Plays is virtually identical to that of the Triangle Elara LN01As. The two models’ driver complements are also similar, but the Kin Plays are larger, with more powerful amplification. The two-way Kin Play is a rear-ported speaker with a 5” natural fiber woofer and a 1” metal-dome tweeter. The left channel serves as the primary speaker, and houses the single 120Wpc amplifier that powers both speakers.

Which is not to say that the Elaras don’t go loud. They do. Or that they sound small, ‘cos they don’t, especially when they’re used in a compact room. Triangle’s design specifically strives to achieve the warm and detailed signature sound that listeners will recognise from other products across their ranges. No Vinyl Left Behind In conclusion, the Triangle LN01A speakers are a compelling option for anyone seeking a powerful and refined active HiFi system, with less boxes taking up space.Triangle AIO TWIN Speakers is the latest system from Triangle Electroacoustique, the French specialist for loudspeaker systems. The fact that this is once again a compact, versatile active loudspeaker system shows that the French are consistently trying to expand their target group. In use, all the electronics and amplification built into the right speaker connect to the passive left speaker via a supplied 3-metre cable.
