Here are a few great places to camp in Scotland: Fort William and Glen Nevis

Of all the destinations caravanning types put on their wish list, Scotland’s often one that features somewhere up near the top. And with good reason… for this is a land of many many (many many many) scenic spots, countless outdoor activities, miles of stunning coastline, heaps of historic sights, fab food (haggis, obviously, but also fresh seafood, cheeses, shortbread…) and of course the water of life itself (that’s the whisky – originally ‘uisge beatha’– that warms many an evening around these parts). Scotland is known for golf and there are some world class links courses here including St Andrews, Turnberry and Muirfield. The Cairngorms National Park is home to a spectacular mountain range, offering plenty of activities for all ages and abilities. There are hundreds of trails and paths for walking and cycling with routes available at the visitor centres throughout the park. There are eight castles, 12 golf courses, nine nature reserves and a bridge based bungee jump to fill your days. The Cairngorms are also renowned for being great for UK snowsports and watersports. Head to the awe- inspiring Glasgow Cathedral for a delightful example of Scottish gothic architecture.Or how about a Scotland camping tour with a theme? Plot a scenic road trip along the North Coast 500, challenge yourself to complete one of Scotland’s best hiking routes (the glorious 96-mile West Highland Way is a classic) or take a leisurely meander along the Speyside malt whisky trail. Edinburgh is the country’s capital and second largest city (Glasgow being the largest) and was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses in Europe. Today there’s plenty to do in and around Edinburgh.

With the all the fantastic landscapes and beautiful sandy beaches on offer, families have loads of options from swimming, cycling, and walking to sightseeing and just relaxing with a picnic. However. This approach has its challenges – not least finding that blissful spot. Suitable stopover points are limited and the best ones are well documented – so you may find yourselves having to drive around for a while in search of The One. It’s worth bearing in mind, too, that a layby that seems quiet when you park up may in fact see a fair amount of traffic later on, and there’s nothing to stop several more vans parking up right alongside you (sure you wouldn’t rather be on a spacious pitch within a peaceful caravan park?) Climb to the top of the extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat which perches above the city and is visible from most places. It’s a relatively easy hike for most and gives you a good view of the city and surrounding area.

Kids love castles and Scotland has many of them, but Stirling Castle in particular makes for a fantastic family day out. This is one of Scotland's most important historical buildings and there is a whole section of exciting exhibitions that help bring history alive for children.
