Description

This way of immortality always leads me to the question of why people tend to believe that death has to be an integral part of society as if funerals were great fun and stinking corpses roses. There is a great video about this topic

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) was not your typical space opera. In fact, it didn't feel anything like the usual storytelling of introduction, build-up and climax. As the variations of Bobs headed off to other galaxies to search for habitable planets, while one returned to Earth to ascertain the fate of humans since the original Bob left over two decades ago and another decided to attempt terraforming a potential planet, the narrative felt very much like an episodic futuristic reality show of space exploration. It still was really enjoyable, even though I wouldn't call it remarkable as yet. Dennis E. Taylor works as a computer programmer, snowboarder, writer, and runner. Taylor added the middle initial “E”, due to the large amount of Dennis Taylor’s in both the music and writing fields. He is the author of the “Bobiverse” series and some stand alone novels; his novels are from the genre of science fiction.Earth is riven by struggles between competing power blocs with their own interstellar probe programs, and Bob has to deal with bombs, sabotage and political pressure before he even makes it into space. When he eventually reaches space, and begins to send copies of himself through the galaxy, We are Legion branches off into multiple engaging narratives across tens of light years. The device of having multiple slightly different versions of the same person is surprisingly effective. We get to follow along with uptight Bobs, gregarious Bobs, antisocial Bobs and of course, the original Bob as they explore strange new worlds, seek out new life etc. etc.(intentional Star Trek reference- the Bobs make a few of them in Taylor's book). A fun and funny but unspectacular space opera elevated by a clever narrating voice(s) and unique set-up. Taylor lives near Vancouver, Canada with his wife and daughter. He enjoys snowboarding and mountain biking when he isn't writing or traveling. [19] Bibliography [ edit ] Bobiverse (2016–2021) [ edit ] No. Boy likes ice cream so much, when mom told him they're going out to have one later, he couldn't contain his emotions and shrieked out of pure joy.

If you were looking for something light and fun with a surprisingly good story you could do a lot worse then spending 10 hours with Bob.The series is centered about Bob Johansson who has just sold off his software company and he’s looking forward to having a luxurious. There are m many places to go, several movies to watch and a lot of books to read. So, it’s rather a little bit unfair when Bob gets killed when crossing the street. Original Bob continues to shepherd the still-primitive Deltans, and his friend Archimedes, through threats and conflict, while one Bob falls in love and Bill, the resident of Epsilon Eridani gets ever closer to building an android that can physically embody the consciousness of his fellow Bobs. That´s just a little, conventional aspect of the whole thing, but the fact that the war machinery is the main protagonist and can optimize its killing ability to a level even pure AIs might not be able to, is an interesting, fresh sci fi aspect. Because there are many collective hive minds or evil insect queens controlling all of its minions, optional with some officers and generals with more activated brainpower in between or bred less degenerate than the worthless cannon fodder warrior caste, but no democratic collective of many clones fighting in perfect coordination for altruistic reasons.

This is the second installment in Bobiverse Series by Dennis E. Taylor. The Bobiverse is now growing quite fats and all the Bobs have their own hands. The scale is particularly delightful. You've gotta love a snarky nerd engineer-turned-AI distributed over 30 light years who's wondering what the hell the humans are doing. I mean, he's pretty well-adjusted, copying bits of himself into new iterations and letting them rename themselves as cultural nerd-pieces from the reader's culture. Bob Johansson, affectionately referred to as Bob, used to be an engineer in 21st century. He signed up to have his head preserved cryogenically upon his death just for future resuscitation to a new body. However, in a strange and ironic twist of fate, he died in less than 24 hours after doing so. He woke up a century later only to find out that his new body was in form of a type of computer program. Bob Johansson had become a replicant. Bob’s mission was becoming an artificial intelligence manning interstellar probe for searching for habitable planets. It later turns out that The USA wasn’t the only nation that was planning to lay claims as being the first nation to seek out the new worlds. I was also not surprised by the presence of “The Others” but as I said this book is fun fluff, so a slightly predictable storyline was not a deal breaker for me. Taylor's "Bobiverse" series explore how technologies like cryonics, mind uploading and artificial intelligence might change the society and the human condition. [7] [8] Another major topic is global catastrophic risk, which is also featured in Outland and The Singularity Trap. [9] [10]

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) really took me by surprise, it had a unique angle to the space theme and I liked the main protagonist(s). With this second installment you know exactly what you are going to get. Exactly! A total aside: my husband was watching the Science Channel the other night and the show was talking about 3D printers and I asked if Von Neumann probes were mentioned. He looked at me as if I were a nut. No, he said. Two minutes later the show went into what they were and how they would work and I puffed up with pride. (Picture Fredo Corleone: "I'm smart!")

So a story where a contemporary human is turned into an AI and has AI like abilities, while familiar is already pretty interesting to me. The fact that Dennis E Taylor wants to tell the story of a modern human becoming a self replicating Von Neumann probe opens up the entire universe and allows the reader to experience it from a perspective we understand and can relate to - the "lovable geek". The first book was good. . . I guess. It didn't really have an ending, but I enjoyed it well enough.Oh, and Bob is dead. For reals this time. But his mind, personality, and memories have been used to create a self-replicating AI. The storyline at times felt like the reimagining of the computer game sim city….. inter-galactic style. This is a great sequel to We Are Legion (We Are Bob) that brought about significant development in both the characters and the plot.
