What I also really like is the expandability of the system. For myself, I don’t need the optional High Bright Remote Screen, but it’s nice to think that one day I may be running a production that requires more than just myself monitoring what’s going on! Gimbal-shot video is much more in evidence these days, and making it possible without adding too much weight or size is a great achievement. We can see real appeal for most professionals –an ideal second camera choice for weddings, for example. Update the firmware using the DJI Ronin app by connecting the DJI RS 3 via Bluetooth. Do not disconnect the DJI Ronin app and DJI RS 3 during the update process.

What’s nice about the RS3 Pro is that it’s affordable at the base level of a single-handed gimbal stabiliser. Then as your needs progress, you can bolt on that additional functionality. Then, when you need something a lot more, the RS3 can be unbolted from the grip, placed onto a car, aerial or another rig, and incorporated. It is simply the most expandable and flexible gimbal out there. Due to the huge variety of uses, I can only imagine the product designers and electrical engineers at DJI sweating over what seems like an impossible task. Setting up the DJI RS3 Pro at the base level is easy; plug it in balance, and you’re ready to go. At the next level, plug in the RavenEye, hook in a mobile phone, and you have wireless video transmission, all very clever; then you have the HighBright Control screen, and so on. This mirrorless option will then give plenty of options for most run-and-gun videographers and filmmakers who are simply looking for a cheap, high-quality stabiliser. It also gives pros a lightweight gimbal that can easily be transported into places where it would usually be difficult or, at the very least, inconvenient to take a full-sized gimbal. Ultimately once you work out where all the wires go for the focus motor, RavenEye and camera control, it’s all quite straightforward. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, there are few set-up notes; however, most of what applies to the set-up of the focus motor and Raven Eye again apply here. Full compatibility with the DJI High Bright monitor systemThe performance of the Ronin RS3 Pro in isolation is excellent. Other manufacturers don’t, as yet, match the build quality; the fact that it will equally easily balance a Sony A7 III or Sony FX6 without issue means plenty of scope for all levels. One of the instantly notable features in the new larger 1.8 OLED full-colour screen. This is 28% larger than the one on the RS2 and allows you to switch settings, with the optional RavenEye plugged in, you can also get a live view stream.

Optimized the follow curves for PTF mode to make the follow speed of tilt and pan axes stay the same. Regarding control, the small 1.4-inch screen might be smaller than the 1.8-inch screen on the other two models, but it is still more than sufficient for guiding you through the options and settings. The RS3 Pro can also be used with the 4D Hand Grips, Master Wheels and Force Pro for gimbal and focus control. Note: When one power port serves as an input port, the other becomes an output port, or vice versa. Two plugs can’t be input power at the same time. In the test, the Bluetooth connection between the camera and the gimbal worked well, with the record button on the gimbal robustly connecting with the function on the camera as if they were connected by cable.

Can the Ronin stabilizers shrink to suit mirrorless cameras and keep delivering the goods?

Added support for zoom control using front dial for Sony FX3, A7S3, A7C, A7M3, A7M4, A7R3, A7R4, A9 II, ZV-1, A6400 and A6600 cameras when connecting the gimbal via Bluetooth. The attachment of the camera to the gimbal highlights the first interesting innovation of the gimbal design with the usual clamp on the lower part of the tilt axis that enables you to mount the camera horizontally. But, then take a look at the vertical of the tilt arm, and you see the ability to shift the mount so that the camera can be mounted vertically, ready for TikTok and other social media channels. Using the App opens up some of the more advanced features; these are generally accessible through the grip but easier to understand through the larger interface of your mobile screen. The build of the DJI RS 3 Mini is small and solid, with only three parts to the entire rig. Firstly you have the actual RS 3 Mini with full aluminium arms and an extremely well-finished design. Then into the base, you can screw in the small tripod that enables you to sit the gimbal down for set-upset-up and balancing, and then when in use, this also doubles as part of an extended handle. The last major part of the RS 3 Mini is the base plate that bolts to the base of your camera and then slots directly into the tilt arm of the gimbal.

The big feature of the RS 3 Mini is that it’s small and lightweight, over 40% less than the RS 3 and 50% lighter than the RS 3 Pro. This means it is an ideal solution for anyone who finds those larger gimbals too heavy to use comfortably or wants a nice compact gimbal stabiliser for their mirrorless camera. The size and weight also lend the gimbal for travel, documentary or any scenario where you need to be agile and travel light. Taking just the base Ronin RS3 Pro into consideration in this review and it is incredible, with solid support for all mirrorless and DSLR cameras suited to filmmaking. In use, the RS3 Pro is fast to react and offers plenty of onboard adjustments and features. However, it really starts to shine once the accessories are attached, and while most accessories can wait there are two that you should consider purchasing at the outset; the RavenEye and Focus motor. As with previous Ronin’s, the main gimbal is only part of the story. As a stand-alone product, it’s good, adds the optional accessories, and the Ronin RS3 Pro transforms into an essential filmmaking tool that can be used on any production size. Even though the RS 3 Mini is smaller than the RS 3 Pro, it’s still aimed at the Mirrorless market and has a price tag to attract enthusiasts, but the size and features will also attract the pros looking to go light.Update the firmware for the DJI Ronin Image Transmitter using the DJI Ronin app by connecting the Image Transmitter via Wi-Fi. Do not disconnect the DJI Ronin app and DJI Ronin Image Transmitter during the update process. Ultimately this is a good tool at a very appealing price, and if only the balancing process could be a little more precise it’d earn that 5th star. Staying with the axis and the carbon arms, these have been extended slightly to enable the mounting of some of the new midweight professional cameras, such as the Sony FX6 and Canon EOS C70. For a gimbal of this size to take the weight of either of these cameras is impressive. While I don’t have access to either of these cameras, a Canon C100 MKII comfortably sat on the DJI Ronin RS3 Pro without issue and with plenty of clearance. Due to the camera and gimbal size, there is far more of a feeling of oneness between the two devices. While I have been using either the 24-70mm or fixed focal length lenses, you can see how beneficial this rig would be with the Sony motorised zoom lenses. Then there’s the usual design consideration for the micro tripod; like an after thought, this still bolts to the base, and while it could be argued that it’s optional, it’s not; you need it for the initial balancing and installation of the camera, so couldn’t it be a neat integral part?
