Aguado’s 25 Pieces Pour Guitare (MP3) http://ukulelehunt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/aguado-25-pieces-pour-guitare.mp3 You can also exercise your hand by stretching in the reverse direction, holding out your arm and letting your hand droop down towards the floor. Then reach under with your other hand and pull on the fingers towards you for a soft stretch. It’s time for another book review. This time it’s Ukulele Aerobics For All Levels which is something a little bit different if you’re used to the standard type of ukulele book. Much like our reversed 1234, the reversed spider (or should that be The Redips?) again starts with our pinkie at fret 4. The pattern is essentially the same as the spider but we’re moving down the notes rather than up them. The Hammer Up Good stretching practice is to hold for 15-20 seconds and never stretch to where it hurts – only to the feel-good point.

In fact, 10 minutes per day is much more effective than long practices at a weekend. Long practices are tiring so you’ll be more likely to give up, and may forget what you were working on. I’ve already mentioned that this book is a little different to any other ukulele book that I’ve previously bought or read. It’s almost entirely constructed of exercises and the whole book is presented in a weekly format. There are 40 weeks in total so you should be kept busy enough. You’re then given exercises to do each day that you play. This format might be a little dry for some players – I wouldn’t say it’s the most fun way to teach people to play but I’m ok with that. I’m the kind of person that likes a challenge.

Stretches:

When we arrive at the A string, we then slide up and start with our index finger on the second fret. This means that your second finger gets the third fret, ring finger getting the fourth fret and pinkie on the fifth. The spider is very similar to the 1234 with a small variation. As we change strings, we also move up a fret at the same time. This creates a kind of zig-zag pattern across the fretboard and will get you used to not only switching strings, but also switching frets. The Reverse 1234, or The 4321 takes the same structure as the 1234 but flips it on it’s head. Instead of starting at the first fret and using our index finger, we’re actually starting on the fourth fret and using our pinkie finger. I used to tell my students ‘strum, mute, switch’ when they were doing this – the idea being that after you strum the first chord, your strumming hand mutes the strings before you lift your fretting fingers and switch to the next chord” ~ Joe Satriani in Guitar Player Magazine, February 2008. The Hourglass Combo Exercise To challenge yourself, Practise the strumming patterns with a harder chord like the G. This way you can hit two birds with one stone. Each ukulele strumming pattern explained

If you are only going to do one exercise to prepare for playing ukulele, I would recommend stretching. It loosens up your hands and tells the muscles, “Hey, physical exertion coming up!” This will help you avoid becoming sore and hopefully reduce your chances of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Hand PullHold one of your arms straight out in front of you with your fingers pointing to the sky, 90 degrees to your arm, in a “stop” position. Take your other hand and pull the tips of the fingers towards you so that you feel a stretch. Converting guitar and high/low-G tabs to the tuning you play in– How to shift the numbers around so you can play a tab that isn’t necessarily meant for your tuning. We then do the same again but this time switching to hammering on at the 4th fret with our pinkie finger. Just like the 1234, once we’ve done all 4 frets we move down to the C string, then down to the E string, then A string. After this we simply slide up a fret and do it all over again. The Pull Down

With this one, the rule is: one finger per fret. Your 1st finger plays the first fret, 2nd finger plays the second fret, 3rd finger plays the third fret, and 4th finger plays the fourth fret. Then you switch strings and start over. Start on the G or A strings and work your way across the fretboard. You can either start on an open string or start on the 1st fret. A |--------------------------1-2-3-4--|--1-2-3-4-------------------------- Now add in the use of your ring finger (represented by an a). These exercises are a bit more difficult because the ring finger isn’t known to be the strongest finger in your hand. Use these exercises to build up strength and to free up movement in your ring finger. By mixing the two previous exercises together you can get a cool hybrid warmup that covers the first four frets and all four strings. Another book that’s great for the beginners out there. This book from Play Music Company looks at the anatomy of a ukulele, tuning, strumming, chords and even gives you a few songs to go at. Use the standard notation version for relating notes on the fretboard to their pitches as they appear on the staff. Great for notating fingers on tab and note duration on the staff.|I’ve been working with him on the book right from the start and he did a fantastic job with it. I’ve already learnt a ton from it and it’s inspired me to get more serious about practicing. It gets the muscles in your fingers active so that you can play better and with less physical effort. Jumping into a hard song “cold” is always going to be a rough ride, but get your hands warmed up beforehand and your performance will be much more relaxed and natural. Here are some warm-up ukulele exercises to get those fingers flyin’. Stretches: With a Swing feel (triplet subdivision), it looks like this. Swinging the universal strumming pattern How to Read Ukulele Tabs– Ukulele tabs aren’t hard to figure out, but you need to know what you’re looking at to make sense of them. Blank Tab Sheets Numbers placed on the lines show which fret to press down and are read left to right. (“0” means open string.) A |--------0--

To better understand this, practise counting (1-tri-plet, 2-tri-plet, 3 tri-plet, 4 tri-plet) while clapping the rhythm. Once you can do this, try to do this on the ukulele. Once we’ve got to our pinkie finger we then drop down to the C string and start again at the first fret. How to Figure Out Songs– Being able to ear out a song is a very valuable skill. Here are some tips for DIY songs.

Note-for-note transcriptions” are ukulele tabs of a specific recording and transcribed as accurately as possible. What is an Ukulele Tab? Practice tip: In these exercises, you switch between just a C and G7 chord. For more practice, write out your own chord progressions and practice these arpeggios while switching between other different chords. Dionisio Aguado’s “25 Pieces Pour Guitare, no. 17” Ukulele tabs marked with “ lead sheet” are Guitar Pro transcriptions of the melody, words (if applicable), and chords. In this pattern we keep moving up one fret at a time. I would suggest you do this until your pinkie finger is landing at the twelfth fret. The Spider
