Barley Straw: Use barley straw as a natural remedy to combat blanket weed. Barley straw releases compounds that inhibit the growth of algae and blanket weed. Simply place a bunch of barley straw in a net or mesh bag and submerge it in the pond. Replace the barley straw every 6-12 months for continuous effectiveness. There are three main factors that can cause blanket weed to form within ponds: excessive sunlight and nutrients, and a high pH level. These factors are also the possible reason for any reoccurring blanket weed problems. Pond Aeration: Install a pond aerator to improve oxygen levels in the water. Adequate oxygen levels discourage the growth of blanket weeds and other unwanted aquatic plants. The increased oxygen also promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria that compete with the blanket weed for nutrients, helping to reduce its growth. But if your pond is crying out for an overhaul, perhaps because it has silted up or become tooovergrown, thenthebest time to do itis in early autumn, when many creatures are less active. The main types of blanket weed control are barley straws, blanket weed control solutions, tablets and electronic devices. Barley straws will naturally break up blanketweed and create holes in the skin it creates across the surface of your pond. The blanket weed control solutions and tablets use different chemical formulas to treat the invasive weed, while the electronic devices in our range use a small electric pulse to kill the weed in the water. When looking to treat the blanket weeds within a pond, you’ll have a few options available, with both manual methods and treatment products available: Solution 5: Pond Maintenance. Implementing good pond maintenance practices, such as removing debris, reducing nutrient inputs, and avoiding overfeeding of fish, can help prevent the buildup of excess nutrients that fuel the growth of blanket weed. Oxygen Depletion: Blanket weed can also contribute to oxygen depletion in the pond. During the day, blanket weed produces oxygen through photosynthesis. However, at night, it consumes oxygen through respiration, and dense mats of blanket weed can rapidly deplete oxygen levels in the water, potentially leading to oxygen stress or even fish kills. This can be particularly problematic in warm weather or during periods of low oxygen availability, such as in the winter when the pond may be covered by ice.Sansai - 3 Year Old Ogata Koi Yonsai - 4 Year Old Ogata Koi Gosai - 5 Year Old Ogata Koi All Ogata Koi For Sale Hydra Quartz is a highly effective treatment to rid your pond of blanket weed as it starves the blanket weed by absorbing the nutrients on which the weed survives on. The blanket weed growth dies off normally within two to three days, after which, it can be safely removed without the risk of releasing spores into the water. Features & Advantages Lower oxygen levels in a pond: Blanket weeds can consume huge amounts of oxygen from a pond, which will cause further issues to plants and fish in and around them. A good level of oxygen is vital for plants and marine life. Although it is unsightly, it can have it uses. Fish love to spawn in it, it makes a fantastic home for fish fry and is the first food for tadpoles when they emerge from their eggs. However, it can also be dangerous. Some large fish can get tied up in it and die, Sturgeon are well known for this but we have also heard of large Koi being affected. It can also have a negative impact on the oxygen levels in your ponds. Like most plants algae produces oxygen during the day, but reverses the process at night, so too much blanketweed in a pond may mean that the fish are starved of oxygen just before dawn. Snails:Ramshorn snails will eat your pond algae alongside any uneaten fish food! They are usually available in shops during the summer, but ensure you introduce only Ramshorn snails as they are particularly good for algae. You can find out more information on Pond Snails here.

But algae can also provide valuable shelter and hiding places in a wildlife pond.Hitting the perfect balance between nutrients and uptake from pond plants. It’s not as hard to achieve as you might fear. To treat floating type, we recommend you use Blanketweed Klear. Natural and eco-friendly components of Hydra Quartz pose no danger to aquatic life including fish and water plants. Safe with pets, birds and visiting animals that may drink treated water. Nutrients from manures and fertilisers can be washed in to a pond by heavy rain. Ideally design and build a pond to avoid this, and do not apply these close to the pond
