Description

In the days leading up to his encounter with Kandar The Destroyer, Ash wore a small clip on his belt containing four extra shotgun shells. Though most deadites end their term in a spray of giblets and dismembered limbs, the combat itself isn't so satisfying. On this occasion, with a brand new story based on the world created in the Evil Dead films, Ash can teleport to 4 distinct eras of Dearborn, to not only see how the invasion of the dead took place all those years ago, but to watch in horror as they multiply and control the world they now live in. The second licensed Evil Dead video game from 2003 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, developed by VIS Entertainment and published by THQ. One of the best things about the game is what Bruce Campbell brings to the games overall charm and character by providing the voice of Ash. He also did so for the previous Evil Dead game, but in that instance, provided a very subdued, unenthusiastic performance. This isn’t the case here, however, and he delivers the familiar style one-liners, quips and banter that have been scripted well in tune with the ‘Army of darkness’ movie in particular, and are brought to life with some genuine gumption and conviction by Campbell, as only he can.

Mythology Gag: One of Ash's taunts is "Ever read A Farewell to Arms? Well I wrote it", which is reference to a visual gag in Evil Dead 2. Go down it. You will immediately be swarmed by a mob of Deadites. Lure them out into the exhibit room, so you have space to operate, and take them down. In a little nook at the bottom of the ramp is a Save Token. Grab it and head through the arched doorway. Continue through the next chamber, then follow the long set of stairs as it winds down to a banquet room. Move through and make your way to a dirt path that connects to a grand hall. Grab another Save Token at the center of the room. Then move up the curved staircase and step through the dark arched door to face the boss.

The game sports some really good monster designs. There are some huge plodding green nasties, which are suitably imposing, and there is some enormous guardians to encounter at certain intervals, as well as the good assortment of decrepit twisted deadites that stumble about in a charismatic fashion. Sometimes you will encounter deadite torsos which drag themselves around with their hands, which is cool. When you get to the Dearborn police station, the yard where you need to go is surrounded by Deadites. You do not have to kill any of them. First, find the Spell Scroll that allows you to posses a Deadite for a limited amount of time,.This spell takes up three mana. Posses a Deadite, then run to the other side of the yard. You will find the Cypher and a envelope that you must take to the auto body shop. Note: The police Deadites will not recognize you as Ash, but the others will. Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: It turns out Trisha is the Deadite Queen, and the final boss. Small hints throughout the game seem to suggest that she was possessed by evil the whole time, or at least for most of the game, rather than just at the end. There's really not much to say about the graphics. They definitely don't come close to pushing the limits of the Xbox hardware. In fact, at times, they look downright bad. The textures are plain and a tad pixilated, the character models are pretty standard (with the exception of Ash, who looks pretty good), and the effects are good, but nothing special. Return to the main lobby. Facing the dinosaur's front, go up the left staircase, and follow the path to an Ice Age exhibit. You will start to hear the divining device bleeping at this point. As you get near the stuffed lion near the entrance to the next exhibit, the device will freak out. Use dynamite to blow a hole in the wall here and collect the blue crystal that is revealed. Move through the Volcanic Earth room to that of The Core. Use dynamite on the picture of the core to score a red crystal. In the watery exhibit room that's next, you'll find a vial that will boost your mana capacity. You'll also find the Summoner Spell and some dynamite. What a haul!

This facet of the game adds something unique to the game mechanics, which proves to be a welcome addition.

“You are here, and it's beautiful, and escaping isn't always something bad.”

Arm Cannon: In the museum, Ash finds a fluid cannon for his stump that coats enemies in gasoline, allowing them to be set on fire with one shot; it gets upgraded into a flamethrower during the colonial era. During the Civil War era, Ash also gets a Gatling gun to strap to his stump. Go to the other door you opened and kill the Slavelord here to get the cell key. Then go free the prisoners oin both rooms. Go inside the right room to find a leecher and Save Token. Talk to the man with the ! above his head. He'll tell you the way out, and give you a wrench. Use it on the control panel near the grated door to get out. Prior to being "acquired" by Ash Williams, the shotgun was owned by Raymond Knowby, who presumably used it for hunting on the property which the Knowby Cabin was located. It is unknown if Raymond bought the gun new or second-hand.

Fans of the movies will get into the game simply because Bruce Campbell's constant dialogue infuses the action with enough personality to separate it from the other action titles. Straight-up action fans might get bored with the game halfway through, but after all, the game costs half as much. This is the second Evil Dead game I know of; the previous, also by THQ, was awful in every way. So awful, in fact, that I only bought this because someone said it was better. Medical bags can be collected at some points, and stored in inventory, to top up your health when necessary. On occasion, deadites will drop a mini health kit, that will give you a small health increase instantly. Given the more open adventure style nature of the game, Saving progress is handled here with tokens that can be found at certain points about the various levels. Once collected, they are stored in your inventory, and can be used at any time during a level to keep all that you have accomplished to that point. Also, you get some freebie saves before and after a boss battle, which is a neat little inclusion. After the Necronomicon is read aloud in a local television program, Deadites are running amok in the small town of Dearborn, Michigan. It's once again up to Ash ( Bruce Campbell) to fix things up by killing every sorry-ass deadite in his way and even travelling through time. It's nice to see that games are starting to move away from the formula of basing their games directly on specific movies. Like Enter the Matrix, Evil Dead utilizes the license to tell a story about Ash and the Deadites that doesn't exist in any of the movies. For fans of the campy horror films, the story is instantly recognizable, but it's delivered in the signature style of Bruce Campbell. Search everywhere. There are tons of Save Tokens hidden in the nooks and crannies of the levels. Make sure you find them. When you press Triangle, Ash will say a funny comment. Later in the game, he gains the ability to say different comments. For example, when in Downtown Dearborn, he says, “What time is it? Bah, what do you care, you’re dead.” In the Outskirts of Dearborn he is incapable of saying this. Objectives are automatically recorded on a "To-Do" list featuring scribbled handwriting on crumpled paper
