Description

Halloween is right around the corner and the county's favourite castle is hosting a spooky spectacular.

Then, when the Normans invaded England, William the Conqueror took the English crown in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Two years later, he makes a wooden motte and bailey fort.

Venue History

The building is steeped in rich history having survived a raging fire from an unknown force, an outbreak of plague and the English Civil War and frequentlyreceiving visitations from the famous William Shakespeare. The Haunted Castle is available to explore every day, 10am to 5pm, and guests can attend haunted shows, visit the haunted hollows, witch's tower or find their way through the Horrible Histories maze. The castle's 64-acres of land has been given an eerie touch and is available to explore, as well as the castle dungeon.

These numerous spectres include a semi-transparent Edward Shirley, a former owner, who strides through the lobby each and every Christmas Eve with his canine companion, in The Long Gallery (likely the most paranormally active section of the lodge) a military officer and an eldery woman flit about the room, a serving lass named Mary who met her maker after a sudden drop lingers in the Oak Room and a monk (naturally) is bound to the church. This lady is similar to us, in that she had an avid interest in the supernatural. Recently records of a seance performed by her shows that, even in the 1800s, ghosts were stirring in the keep for she wrote that she witnessed an apparition of a child bearing flowers and connected to a spirit called Edward Jameson, an old servant, who wrote some notes through Anne’s hand. However, once he took note that his days were beginning to dwindle he crafted a will with a bequest of an amount of money dedicated to his servant.

We arrived bright and early on Saturday morning ready to experience their The Haunted Castle event. This event is running daily until October 31 and is suitable for all the family.I went with my family and we all had something different. I decided to have Guy’s Tower Hot Dog topped with pulled BBQ pork on top and medieval ‘dirty’ chips which are skin on! My Dad had the Fish and Chips and my Mum decided to have one of their sandwiches.

There's ghosts, ghouls, wizards and witches. The Dead Centre Stage based in the Castle Courtyard features a a host of colourful characters - and throughout the day it was fun to drop in and see what was happening. As a family of four, we were certainly spooked - but we also had a really great time. Our favourite mazes were definitely Haunted Hollows, both in the daytime and night. While out of the scare mazes Hunted went down best with my partner and stepson.Constructed in the 12th century, Coombe Abbey was originally the abbey for a group of Cistercian monks. It passed into the Harington family after the dissolution of monasteries, who sold it to numerous owners until the Craven family took possession in 1622 and held onto it until 1921. Spectators of the intriguing objects often find they are under an unpleasant sensation of being strangled by an invisible source. Leave all to the future research. The Power at work is not that of the mortals in the Castle of here. The Spirit of my called Edward Jameson is one of these who now haunt the place… This story was then routinely revived in the 1960s by his son David, Lord Brooke, especially in the press and magazines promoting visitors to the castle. 3 It is perhaps no coincidence that these ghostly tales coincided with the sale of Sir Fulke Greville’s manuscripts to the British Library in 1968, and when scholars reignited interest in Greville’s life, poetry and writings (Joan Rees’s seminal book on Sir Fulke was published in 1971, for example). It was during the ownership of Lord Brooke in 1973 that the rooms of the Watergate Tower, suitably re-named the ‘Ghost Tower’, were opened to the public for the first time. The atmospheric oak panelling of these rooms, which lends them a Jacobean flavour, was installed in the 18th century and re-arranged in its present condition during the 1850s-1860s due to work undertaken by architect Anthony Salvin. The eventual installation of Sir Fulke’s portrait and seventeenth century furniture in these rooms would complete this vision, a relic to accompany the miracle of his ghost. Needless to say, a documentary report published in 1996 concluded that “Although little trace of Fulke Greville’s alterations survive in the tower, … it is unlikely that he ever lived in it…” 4 More recent representations
