Hellboy Universe Reading Order:

The first books introduced most of the characters, concepts, and themes that defined the Hellboy Universe. Hellboy: Oddest Jobs– An anthology that collects short stories from famous authors like Joe R. Lansdale, China Miéville, Barbara Hambly, Ken Bruen and Tad Williams. Cameron Stewart was the writer on the Ashley Strode stories, 2012's Exorcism and 2016's The Exorcist. Collects Sledgehammer 44 #1-2 and Lightning War #1-3. Takes place 10 years after Lobster Johnson: The Iron Prometheus. It’s recommended to read it before B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth: Metamorphosis. Also collected in Hellboy Universe: The Secret Histories. Some mythologies say that at the end of time, the dead or damned would overrun the Earth, either leading it to be a utopia (some Native American religions), or signaling the time of Ragnarok ( Norse Mythology).

Collects The Sword of Hyperborea #1-4. The story explores the past but has to be read here to avoid spoilers about the end of the main series. Hellboy: The Fire Wolves– A novel by Tim Lebbon. Hellboy is called to Amalfi, Italy, by Franca, a young member of the Esposito family as she fears that a dark curse on her family is about to claim her cousin as its next victim. Hellboy encounters a flaming demon-a fire wolf. As you may have guessed, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. is about Hellboy and his adventures with the B.P.R.D. They take place in the ’50s as Hellboy is still learning how to fight the monsters.

Previously in the Hellboy universe

What are the main series? Even if Hellboy is the most famous series of this big universe created by Mike Mignola, there’s a lot more. The most notables are: Hellboy, Hellboy in Hell, B.P.R.D., and Abe Sapien; Add to that the spin-offs Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder, Lobster Johnson, and a lot of miniseries. B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth—Russia (5-issue arc, written by John Arcudi and Mike Mignola, September 2011 – January 2012) The third and final major story cycle, along with its creative team, has yet to be officially announced.Hell on Earth has seen an increase in the volume of material released. In addition to the primary plotline which continues to come out on a monthly basis, there are side stories as well with a shift of focus on the regular B.P.R.D. agents.

The magic system is one of fantasy’s most difficult worldbuilding elements, whether it be urban, epic, or even gaslamp fantasy. A too-rigid system reads like the instructional manual to a tabletop roleplaying game, while a too-loose system comes off as magic as a spamming of deus ex machina. A good creator treats magic like music, in which they establish a foundation (chords/scales/progressions) and then manipulate those foundations, like improv jazz, to showcase something new and exciting. It becomes an application of those foundational of that baseline (or bass line, to follow the metaphor) and then the twisting of them that makes for an engaging sense of magic in fiction. B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth—Monsters (2-issue arc, written by John Arcudi and Mike Mignola, July–August 2011) Collects Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury, and the short story “The Mole.”Cover image for JUL231384 Chilling Adventures Presents: Madam Satan – Hell on Earth #1, by (W) Eliot Rahal (A) Riccardo Federici (CA) Vincenzo Federici, in stores Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS Collects short stories like “The Penanggalan,”“The Hydra and The Lion,”“The Troll-Witch,”“The Vampire of Prague,” and the 2-issue miniseries “Makoma”. This is the end of the main story. The last three books collect The Devil You Know storyline that leads Hellboy & the B.P.R.D. to its natural conclusion.
