Rangers recognised Tavernier, plus fellow modern-day legends Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, for their iconic contributions. Tavernier joined the club whilst they were competing in the Scottish Championship and helped to secure the title in his debut campaign at the club. None more so than Paul Gascoigne, who made a late cameo to find the net and provoke the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the Ibrox crowd. Rangers will be captained by Light Blue hero Barry Ferguson and joined by other fan favourites including 55 league title winning Jermain Defoe, Saša Papac, Kris Boyd and Michael Mols. But Rest of the World captain Luis Figo rallied his team for the second period and former Spain international Carlos Marchena grabbed the equaliser. I’m looking forward to captaining a team that will include former World Cup, Champions League and Ballon D’Or winners and best of all, the weekend will raise important funds for my foundation which supports children around the globe.”Jermaine Defoe in particular has lost none of his striker’s instinct, albeit he’s only recently retired, as he scored a double and Kris Boyd was also on the scoresheet for a team of Rangers Legends. WORLD LEGENDS: James, Huth, Stam, Dawson, Chimbonda, Essien, Petit, Downing, Wilshere, Van Persie, Yakubu

FOLLOWING a hugely successful Weekend of Legends last season, Rangers are delighted to announce that the Weekend of Legends II, presented in partnership with 5 Stars, will take place in March 2023. The celebrations had started on Saturday evening as Rangers hosted a ‘Night of Legends’ at New Edmiston House. The likes of Alex McLeish, Arthur Numan and Jorg Albertz took to the stage alongside broadcaster Emma Dodds to tell tales of title triumphs and relive the treasured memories from their glittering Ibrox careers. Gascoigne only had a brief stay in Glasgow but left more than a mark on the Gers’ history. He helped the Gers claim two top-flight trophies and lift a Scottish Cup before making a move to Middlesbrough. While his icon at Ibrox began from the first day he walked through the door. One day with Smith was enough to convince future Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne to move to Ibrox from Lazio. He was one of the most naturally gifted Englishmen of all time and chose to join the Gers for his return to Britain in 1995. The next three years were the stuff of icons.

The squads

Greig established himself firmly as a Rangers legend during a storied spell at Ibrox from 1961 to 1978. The defender graduated from Rangers’ academy and helped the Glasgow giants go on to lift several trophies. He would eventually retire as a five-time Scottish top-flight winner. Around 30,000 were in attendance in Govan today for the game with all money raised during the match going to charity. The quality of football may not have been up the standards that some of the players performed at, indeed at times the game went down to a walking pace but as always during occasions like the one today charity is the real winner. Barry Ferguson can’t wait to return as captain and said: “Everyone knows how much I love the club so to have the opportunity to lead the Rangers Legends team as Captain is an honour and I can’t wait to play again in front of the fans.” A consummate professional, Richard Gough became a Rangers legend over his two stints at Ibrox. The defender briefly departed the Glasgow giants after a decade in 1997 to try his skill in America with Kansas City Wizards. But he would return to Ibrox to enjoy one more season. Playing for Rangers was one of the highlights of my career so it is always a privilege to relive that experience and to do so for a match celebrating our 150th anniversary makes it even more special.

Luís, Giovanni and Roy will star alongside a World Legends squad featuring Roberto Carlos, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Pires and a Rangers Legends team featuring former heroes such as Paul Gascoigne, Kris Boyd, Michael Mols, Saša Papac and Nikica Jelavić. His 15 years at Ibrox further returned a staggering 20 major honours with 10 top-flight titles. McCoist helped to make Rangers the all-conquering force in Scotland from the mid-1980s to the late-1990s. His haul of winners’ medals featured nine League Cups and a Scottish Cup.

Key Events

Some of those on show still looked in decent shape. Defoe and Van Persie, for example, were sharp and bright and both took their goals with the quality that they were famed for during their careers.
