About this deal

And if you think, “well sure, Spider-Man isn’t bulletproof but there are other super-heroes invulnerable to bullets”. I "get it", that he has extreme guilt over being somewhat culpable for his Uncle Ben's death. The fact remains, though, that the criminal chose to shoot his Uncle Ben; Peter Parker and/or Spider-Man had nothing to do with the criminal actually raising his gun, pointing it, and pulling the trigger. That was the criminal's active choice; the criminal actively chose to shoot Peter's Uncle. Sure, Peter could have stopped the criminal from escaping, and he chose not to. But that does not make Peter directly responsible for Ben's death. He really needs to seek out some kind of counseling or something, either with Doc Samson or maybe somebody with S.H.I.E.L.D., because he is clearly having trouble coping with reality in terms of responsibility. Writer J. M. DeMatteis explained that the story was intended to explore Spider-Man's character and how others perceive him:

One of the best Spiderman stories, and of those the darkest without a doubt. Starting from a story that was originally written for Batman and that at the time did not interest DC, we have here a character, Kraven, who has always been on the list of minor wallcrawler villains. Kraven decides to restore the honor he thinks he has lost by defeating his unbeatable enemy and then putting himself in his place to prove that he can be better than Spiderman. Kraven's Last Hunt, or Fearful Symmetry, is a 1987 Bat Family Crossover between various Spider-Man titles regarding his last battle with Kraven the Hunter. It spans Web of Spider-Man #31-32, The Amazing Spider-Man #293-294 and The Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132. This is the first event title in Spider-Man's publication history, and the first time a single story carried across all the books. While the story of “Kraven’s Last Hunt” has become one of the definitive modern Spider-Man stories, it wasn’t always meant to star Peter Parker. Hope Spot: A villainous example. When the spiders that Kraven has kept in a glass cage congregate to form a gigantic and monstrous spider, he initially believes that it is an hallucination induced by the drugs he has assumed and his own obsession with Spider-Man and he tries to fight it off. But he soon concludes that it is real and is dragged into the cluster of spiders, finally losing what little sanity that he still has.

Superior Successor: Kraven defeats Spidey, then takes up his costume, going out to vanquish Vermin, which all three men point out required Captain America's help the last time Vermin was fought. This is Kraven's big goal before he allows himself to die — proving that he could be a better Spidey than Spider-Man. He of course misses the point: there is no Spider-Man. Only Peter Parker, as The Hunter realizes that Spider-Man's humanity and compassion is what defines him and gives him purpose, which Kravinoff himself doesn't have. This deluxe edition also includes the origin story of Kraven by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, along with a few other tales that round out the character, so it's perfect for those who aren't so familiar with him. Ever since his introduction by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964's Amazing Spider-Man #15, Sergei Kravinoff grew obsessed with the idea of bringing down Spider-Man in New York City's urban jungle to prove himself as the world's greatest big game hunter. Kraven's obsessive quest caused him to descend further into villainy, fighting many other Marvel superheroes over the years after becoming a founding member of Doctor Octopus' inaugural Sinister Six. The first three issues heavily use conflicting voiceovers that juxtapose one another and slowly blend together to create a feverish, frenzied rhythm. These display the deepest, darkest fears of the lead characters and when blended together, hint at something supernatural tying their hearts and minds to one another.a b Brian Cronin (July 30, 2009). "Comic Book Legends Revealed #218". Comic Book Resources. Archived from the original on June 30, 2016 . Retrieved June 20, 2013. Soul of the Hunter is kind of a dreary story about Spiderman coming to terms with the events of Kraven’s Last Hunt. Nothing really special there, besides some outstanding artwork. DeMatteis frames his story with a modified version of William Blake’s poem “The Tyger,” changing the subject of the work to “spyder.” And like Blake’s poem, much of “Last Hunt” is dedicated to Kraven’s obsession with an animal. Whereas “The Tyger” sees the author wonder what force in existence could make something as ferocious and beautiful as a tiger, “Last Hunt” sees Kraven wonder how he could make himself into something as powerful and terrible as Spider-Man.

Death Is Cheap: Kraven did stay dead for a long time, rivaling the time Norman Osborn spent dead, but his family eventually revived him against his will.No other novelist has ever explored the staggering duality of existence, illuminated the mystical heights and the despicable depths of the human heart, with the brilliance of Dostoyevsky,” said DeMatteis. “The Russian soul, as exposed in his novels, was really the Universal Soul. It was my soul. And Kraven was Russian. In an instant, I understood Sergei Kravinov.” Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1) #15, #293-294, Web Of Spider-Man #31-32, Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132, Marvel Team-Up #128, Amazing Spider-Man: Soul Of The Hunter, What If? #17 and material from Sensational Spider-Man Annual ’96, Amazing Spider-Man #634-637 , What The--?! #3 A novelised adaption of Kraven's Last Hunt was released in October 2014 as part of Marvel Prose Novel series, adapted from the original issues and expanded upon by Neil Kleid. In this adaptation, Peter and Mary Jane are not married, due to the changes in continuity that resulted from the " One More Day" story arc. This is a story were one of Spider-man villains drugs him, buries him alive for two weeks and then takes it upon himself to dress up as Spider-man and fight crime while he is high as a kite. It's as awesome as it sounds and it's one of the greatest Spider-man stories ever. But what’s critical to the central ideas of “Last Hunt” is that while Spider-Man is thrown into one of his most disturbing challenges, he himself isn’t turned into a darker character. Instead, the temptation to turn a bright hero into a tortured protagonist is fulfilled through Kraven usurping the place of Spider-Man and taking over multiple comics in his attempt to prove himself better than his enemy. In doing so, Kraven lives out an obsession born from a fundamental misunderstanding of the hero while Peter Parker must cling to hope and love to survive his near-death ordeal.

I still place this as one of the best Spider-Man stories ever. DeMatteis' ability to carry the reader into the characters' heads and understand their feelings and beliefs is an incredibly strong part of that placement. While Kraven is one of Spidey's oldest villains, he is, at least visually, one of the funnier looking ones. Beyond his strength, speed and fighting skills, there isn't much too him. DeMatteis plays up his need for a challenging an honorable hunt, deriving that from his upbringing, all of which add dimension to his character. So what makes 'Kraven's Last Hunt' so great? Why has it been able to stand the test of time as one of Spider-Man's best tales? Salicrup has a thought. In the Atomic Mass Games product Marvel Crisis Protocol, the tactics card “ Fearful Symmetry“ appears as a Tactics card. The card allows the Kraven model to be replaced with a Spider-Man Peter Parker model if Kraven removes the Spider-man from play. This new Spider-man is controlled by the player that controlled Kraven previously. Kraven, a long-time Spidey villain, decides that he will hunt Spider-man as apparently Spider-man is the last creature he's been looking to defeat. But he also wants to prove that he’s a better Spider-man than Spider-man – for some reason. Kraven the Hunter has stalked and killed every animal known and only one has ever escaped him. The enhanced superhero known as Spider-Man. This is something that Kraven's pride cannot deal with and he launches his greatest quest yet, to hunt and kill the Spider-Man. He hunts the webslinger down and shoots him with a tranquilizer. Kraven then buries Spider-Man alive. But this is not enough to quench Kraven's thirst. The Hunter then dons the web-slinger's costume and roams the streets as Spider-Man, brutally beating criminals with a violent frenzy that the Spider-Man would never do. Kraven goes after Vermin, a cannibal murderer that Spider-Man needed Captain America's help to defeat. Kraven captures Vermin, proving to himself that he is a better hero than Spider-Man ever was.
