Whilst you can use a roller for gloss paint, you’ll almost always get the best finish with a paint brush.

Traditionalists regard oil-based paint as more durable (and therefore better) but it usually takes longer to dry and has a stronger smell, which takes longer to dissipate. Another bonus is it keeps its shine well. After use, brushes need to be cleaned with a spirit-based product, so that’s something else to keep in mind. Is a bit of a long process from start of application to the finished article (although it’s definitely worth it when you get it right!) Bit of a mad subject this. All oil-based gloss will discolour over time due to restrictions on the VOC’s (chemicals) a manufacturer is allowed to use. The oil in oil-based gloss is an alkyd, and like all alkyds, it will discolour. The best you can hope for is to get a few good years out of it before the oil in the gloss begins to bleed through. If conditions are right, you will not notice the problem of discoloration with Dulux Trade gloss. However, that shouldn’t preclude you from considering the latest product from a company with over 130 years of experience in this area. There’s a consensus that the non-drip part of this product’s title is well-deserved, with a solvent-based formulation designed to minimise splashes and runs during application.

Whatever your budget, whatever your taste, find the best paint for your skirting boards

Used for so many surfaces, gloss paint is extremely popular for its versatility and is often applied to both woodwork and metal surfaces. You will notice gloss paint applied on both interior and exterior doors, window frames, skirting boards and furniture for its unique high sheen and reflective finish. Why Does Gloss Paint Go Yellow? Looking for white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow We’ve used this paint in the past and found it’s a particularly good choice when we’re painting in commercial environments due to its speedy dry time. We always get a high quality finish from it and would definitely recommend it. It’s a water based paint made from a PU Alkyd Emulsion containing a polymer effective at giving water-borne paints high scratch resistance and film toughness.

Water-based paints benefit from reduced drying times compared to oil-based paints and can often be dry to touch within an hour or two. While they often need multiple coats to be fully opaque the reduced drying time means the task of re-application does not have to be a lengthy process. Some homemakers have turned to a more subtle, non-shiny look, which has coincided with increased availability of satin-finish paints. A satin finish is in between gloss and matte; sometimes it’s called semi-gloss or satinwood. As the name suggests, you get a nice sheen when it dries but it’s not as reflective as gloss paint. It’s more durable than eggshell and keeps its colour well. It comes in both oil-based or water-based formulas and is the best-of-both-worlds choice. Dulux’s entry into this list is merely one part of a vast range of products. You can choose from seven tin sizes, from 30ml tester pots to five-litre tubs. We’re big fans of the Ronseal One Coat and would recommend it over any other when it comes to gloss for radiators. If you really want a nice finish with this, we’d recommend giving your radiator a clean and sand down any rusty bits leftover from the old paint. Optionally, you can prime the radiator first with something like BIN Primer. Our paint is easiest to work with if the room is reasonably warm (above 10°C). It’s low odour, but you might still want to open a door or window for extra ventilation. Take care to remove all traces of sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner or by wiping the wood with a clean, uncoloured cloth dampened with white spirit

The Dulux Once Gloss gets our vote when it comes to one coat perfection! It’s easy to apply, has high durability and is easy to wash. You need a natural bristle paintbrush to apply oil-based gloss, otherwise the paint will clog within half an hour or so. Your best bet is the Hamilton Perfection, which is an oil-school brush, but still a favourite amongst Decorators. You will be able to apply gloss paint and lay it off with ease. Available online here. If you do decide to use a roller, you’ll want to have a specific roller at hand that’s been designed for gloss application. A regular roller is likely to leave little fibres behind during application. There is another little frustration to tell you about, Dulux Trade gloss can “creep”. So say you do your walls, then cut a lovely straight line down a doorframe with your Dulux Trade gloss. Some gloss may ‘creep’ a few millimeters from your doorframe onto your wall. This means your lovely straight line is no longer lovely and straight. You will need to then touch your emulsion up again. We’ve included this category because we’ve had many customers in the past ask us if it was even possible to paint your radiator. The short answer – yes it is.

Get Prices for a Professional Decorator Near You However, with the introduction of water-based gloss paint – is proving to be in high demand for many homeowners due to its unique characteristics over traditional oil-based solvent gloss paint. Could this be the solution for white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow? Compared to the wealth of choice provided by Dulux, Johnstone’s range of non-drip gloss paint looks somewhat underwhelming. There are only four colours, though pure brilliant white is available (unlike the Rustins range, branded as ‘white’).
