Description

Freesias bloom readily indoors. Plant the bulbs about 2 inches (5 cm.) apart in a pot filled with regular potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy, and place the pot in a sunny, preferably south-facing window. Expect flowers in 10 to 12 weeks. Prepare the bed by digging and loosening the soil to a depth of at least 8 inches (20 cm.). Plant the freesia bulbs, or corms, at least 2 inches (5 cm.) deep and 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm.) apart. They are herbaceous plants which grow from a conical corm 1⁄ 2–1in) diameter, which sends up a tuft of narrow leaves 10–30cm (4–12in) long, and a sparsely branched stem 10–40cm (4–16in) tall bearing a few leaves and a loose one-sided spike of flowers with six petals. Many species have fragrant narrowly funnel-shaped flowers, although those formerly placed in the genus Anomatheca, such as F.laxa, have flat flowers.

In USDA Zones 9-10 where Freesias are winter hardy, they may be planted outdoors in fall. In cooler areas, Freesia may be planted outdoors from spring to early summer for flowering in summer and fall. They may also be planted indoors in the fall for late winter and early spring flowers.

Freesia Growing Requirements

Freesia caryophyllacea (Burm.f.) N.E.Br. (syn. F.elimensis L.Bolus, F.parva N.E.Br., F.xanthospila (DC.) Klatt) - Heuningrug region in the Cape Provinces Named after German physician Friedrich Freese (1795-1876), Freesias are native to South Africa. They are frost-tender perennials that grow from corms.

Stress relief – A popular flower found to improve wellbeing, the freesia's calming scent is a popular choice for diffusers and incense, ideal if you're trying meditation on for size. The plants usually called "freesias" in horticulture and floristry are derived from crosses made in the 19th century between Freesia refracta and Freesia leichtlinii. Numerous cultivars have been bred from these species and the pink- and yellow-flowered forms of Freesia corymbosa. Modern tetraploid cultivars have flowers ranging from white to yellow, pink, red and blue-mauve. They are mostly cultivated professionally in the Netherlands by about 80 growers. [3] Freesias can be readily increased from seed. Due to their specific and pleasing scent, they are often used in hand creams, shampoos, candles, etc. [ citation needed]; however, the flowers themselves are mainly used in wedding bouquets. The genus was named in honor of Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese (1795–1876), a German physician. [2] Species [1] Fill a tall pot (one with adequate drainage holes) half-full with a well-draining potting mix. Plant the corms 1 to 2 inches deep with their sprouting tips pointing upward. You can usually fit six to eight corms in a 6-inch pot. Add more soil to barely cover the corms, and gently tap it down. Learn more about forcing bulbs indoors. Soil:

Freesias are sold as prepared or unprepared corms (see Planting below for more details on which to go for). Freesias’ long-lasting blooms and pleasant fragrance make them a wonderful choice when giving the gift of flowers. Different colors offer different meanings, making them appropriate for certain occasions. Freesias normally produce flowers 10 to 12 weeks after planting. Once they begin to bloom, they'll stay in flower for six weeks or longer. As with orchids, the blooms open sequentially along the stem, rewarding you with new flowers even as older flowers fade. Plant about 1 to 2 inches deep with the pointed end facing up. For an eye-catching floral display, plant in groups of at least six corms and space them 2 to 3 inches apart. As when planting corms in pots, add stakes to support the flower-laden stems. Watering: Freesia corymbosa (Burm.f.) N.E.Br. (syn. F.armstrongii W.Watson, F.brevis N.E.Br.) - the Cape Provinces
