About this deal

Memory foam mattresses are well known for providing optimum comfort and support for our bodies and joints. But what happens when you upgrade your pillow with the stuff? Key specs – Filling: Memory foam; Cover: Polyester (machine washable); Sizes: 1 (42 x 66cm, 13cm height) Can you put a memory foam pillow in the washing machine? Memory foam is not really meant to get wet so it is highly recommended you use a pillow protector, see tip above. However, you can easily refresh your pillow and remove any odours by sprinkling with bicarbonate of soda. Allow it to sit on the surface for over an hour and then vacuum away. Flip the pillow over and repeat. Although I now think the Levitex outclasses it, there’s still a lot to like about the Silentnight. It has a gently S-shaped foam core designed to open your airways. You can’t really feel it by hand through the fluffy synthetic fibre fill, so there’s nothing outwardly orthopaedic about the pillow (meaning it looks better on the bed). For me it worked straight away: no snoring for several days. It was comfy too, and can be machine washed.

Key features – Filling: Memory foam; Cover: Quilted scuba (neoprene) (machine washable); Sizes: 1 (60 x 35cm, 11/6cm height) From choosing the perfect pillow to cleaning and care tips, here’s everything you need to know about sleeping on a contour memory foam pillows.

The pillow is encased in a luxurious knitted cover which feels very soft to the touch but it is also worth using a pillow protector to help it last longer. Over all, the pillow does feel like a good quality product for the price but the support it offers might not work for everyone. There is also a distinct odour, similar to most memory foam pillows but it will fade if you give it a good airing for a few days. It’s much more comfortable than it looks, thanks in part to the soft, smooth Coolmax material it’s covered in. As a filling, wool is good at temperature regulating and is anti-allergenic, but it takes a bit of getting used to if you’ve only ever slept on common-or-garden hollow fibre pillows before. Another good thing to note is that the 500 Gel Pillow comes with a five-year guarantee against defects in workmanship or materials.

The Pillow is medium firm and feels more malleable than some. It has been designed with drilled cooling holes through the core, which increases airflow and breathability. It has also been given an UltraFresh treatment; this is an antimicrobial shield which helps combat odours, bacteria and protects from staining. There is a slight ‘new-car’ smell to begin with but after a bit of airing this soon dissipates. The right supportive pillow could make all the difference – but instead we sleep on the same saggy old pillow for years on end. “Think about how many hours you sleep each week,” says Gary. “Your car has an annual MOT, but how often do you do an MOT of your pillow? It’s literally, let’s wait until it’s gone threadbare!”Bedding bought from The White Company always feels luxurious and this memory foam pillow comes highly recommended by existing customers. The difference with this pillow is it’s made with shredded memory foam as opposed to one solid piece. This means the foam is simply torn into tiny pieces. There are two types of memory foam pillow; a shredded memory foam pillow and solid memory foam. While shredded foam is more mouldable, you can lose out on support. That’s why a group of researchers in Hamburg developed a pillow that can detect when you start to snore and gently turn your head into a different position. The Nitetronic Z6 has a built-in microphone, head-position sensors and six flexible chambers that inflate and deflate to coax your head to one side or the other. It’s been tested in three German ENT clinics and, while not proven to be a treatment for sleep apnoea, it is thought to reduce mild to moderate cases by about 40 per cent. Time spent snoring is reduced by nearly 70 percent. This depends on personal preference and the weight of your head. The heavier you are, the firmer or denser you need your memory foam products to be.

Key specs – Filling: Memory foam; Cover: 100% cotton cover (machine washable 60C); Sizes: Large is 61cm x 31cm (11.5cm max height); also available in Medium (10cm height) and X Large (13cm height) Since there are various causes of snoring and various sleeping positions, I can’t promise the Levitex would work for everybody. Its austere appearance won’t make your bedroom any more romantic, either. But for me, this is the snore-stopper to beat. We also consider other factors such as removable covers, trial periods and special features (can a pillow be adjusted? Does it have an ergonomic design?) all of which help us to form a comprehensive impression of a product. How do I look after my memory foam pillows? To maintain a clean pillow and to help keep dead skin cells out you should use a removable pillow cover that is machine washable. Go for a cover that is breathable e.g. cotton, bamboo or linen and always use in addition to a pillowcase. Considered the Rolls Royce of memory foam, Tempur was the first brand to release the material into the public domain and they are the only company with licensed rights from the US Space Foundation to use the certified technology seal in their products. I can’t swear that I got a better night’s sleep. However, my wife did. Usually she has to nudge me with varying degrees of vehemence whenever I start snoring. With the machine doing it, she got the night off. The shape of the pillow itself is well-suited to snore prevention: soft on top but with a firm, stable core. There is now a whole industry dedicated to snore-prevention, including courses in diaphragmatic breathing. Some solutions are easier than others, though. “Apart from a new pillow, another simple fix may be to buy a nasal dilator,” says ‘Sleep Doctor’ Michael Breus. “You could try Breathe Right strips, which go across the bridge of the nose, or Mute which goes inside the nostrils. Anything that helps with congestion may reduce snoring.
