But the Nazi party is growing in power, and her marriage comes under increasing strain. Julius is of Jewish origin—and even some of Edith’s closest family believe their relationship is an abomination, demanding she divorce him. In this heartbreaking story based on real events, it will be up to one woman to fight for her love in a world that wants to destroy it. We engage ourselves with personal intimacies of great struggles…with the heartfelt cast Kelly Rimmer brought to life —

The maternal mortality rate in Germany is 7 deaths/100,000 live births (as of 2010). [29] The HIV/AIDS rate is 0.1% of adults (aged 15–49) – estimates of 2009. [30] There are few heroes in this book. Jürgen’s Aunt Adele is perhaps the only purely likable person as she was willing to act against the Nazis. This book shows how fragile the world was and still is as hate can rise up and spread at any time. This book is going to stay with me for a long time. A really solid 4.5 stars for me. If you are a historical fiction fan with a real passion for WW2 books then this needs to be on your list! In 1977, the divorce law in West Germany underwent major changes, moving from a fault based divorce system to one that is primarily no fault. These new divorce regulations, which remain in force today throughout Germany, stipulate that a no-fault divorce can be obtained on the grounds of one year of de facto separation if both spouses consent, and three years of de facto separation if only one spouse consents. There is also provision for a "speedy divorce" which can be obtained on demand by either spouse, without the necessary separation period, if it is proved in court that the continuation of the marriage would constitute an unreasonable hardship for the petitioner for reasons related to the behavior of the other spouse; this exemption requires exceptional circumstances and is considered on a case-by-case basis. [10] [11] I really liked following Anna's story and her strength to get through the horrible events she endured. From her complicated marriage with Hans, to her love affair with Alexander, and trying to do what was best for her son Sasha made her aSoon, she finds herself plunged into a world of revolution and danger where everything she knows can be changed at the stroke of a pen—or the strike of a fist. As the peril grows, can she find the fire in her heart to fight for what is right, at the cost of her own safety?

One of those American wives is Lizzie Miller, from a hardscrabble farming family which lost everything in a debt spiral during the prolonged drought of the 1930s. Her brother, Henry has seen first-hand what the Nazis did, resulting in mental distress termed combat fatigue. To the dismay of the hosts of the welcome party, Lizzie takes a stand and harsh words fly between her and Sofie.

As the title suggests, the reader follows the German wife from the 1930’s, through the war years and just beyond before leaping forwards to 1984. It is a powerful read as we witness a character whose goodness of heart never wavered. “It was a tiny act of kindness in a sea of inhumanity.” It was a time of mass cruelty and unspeakable horrors. The details of the medical research are so well-written but so hard-hitting. You need to have nerves of steel to read through those details. There's a scene where it says that the doctor wanted to run away from the room during the medical trials and I really wanted to join him in running away. It’s horrendous to know what those jerks did under the guise of societal welfare. The World Factbook — Central Intelligence Agency". www.cia.gov. Archived from the original on 18 April 2015 . While their marriage started off lovingly, her husband has become more secretive and distanced ever since his Dachau assignment. When he hires Alexander, a Russian prisoner of war, as a gardener for their house, Annaliese finds herself becoming increasingly drawn to the strong and intelligent man. It is Alexander who reveals to Annaliese the truth of what’s happening at Dachau. Torn between the two men in her life, Annaliese finds herself in a quandary as the war gets closer and closer to home in Munich.

Beaujouan; Tomáš Sobotka; Zuzanna Brzozowska; Kryštof Zeman (January 2017). "Has childlessness peaked in Europe?" (PDF). ined.fr. Jurgen has been here for five years working on Operation Paperclip without his family. When his family arrives, the town is to welcome his family and the other German families, but it is a difficult get together - especially for Lizzie and Sofia. Just like the timeline made for a pleasant change, so did the perspective. We have had WWII historical fiction from multiple points of view: American, English, Polish, Danish, Italian and French. But very few venture into the core of the war, into Germany. Even within these, there are multiple perspectives possible: the Nazis, the commoners, the resistance fighters, the East Germans who struggled with the Russian takeover after the official end to the war,… This book focusses on one of the least common perspectives: the unwilling German Nazi. While it doesn’t handle it perfectly, it still does a pretty good job of it. My thanks to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the ALC of “The German Wife”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the audiobook. One problem that women have to face is that mothers who have young children and want to pursue a career may face social criticism. [22] [23] In 2014, the governing coalition agreed to impose a 30% female quota for Supervisory board positions from 2016 onwards. [24] Reading The German Wife I was snatched from the real life for several hours and I never regretted it! This book is worth it! Amazing unforgettable story became one of my favourites! Relationships were conducted in unnatural times, meaning it was easy for some to persuade themselves that they were in love. This dual-timeline tale of ordinary people fighting for survival and dealing with the repercussions of their choices needs to be on your reading list come January 13, 2022. There are two great quotes in the book: one just before the prologue and detailing Hitler’s views on marriage, the other just before the main story begins and making clear Goebbels’s view on the role of the “perfect Aryan woman” Both these quotes are brilliant and create a firm foundation for the story.
