About this deal

I like to use a mixed hair calligraphy brush made from horse and goat’s hair to write the ancient seal script. This script has rounded forms but at the same time it needs a brush with a stiffer core to simulate the hardness of a knife that engraves a character in stone or bone. Here I have listed some institutions that offer calligraphy courses for beginners. Though, if you want to be smart enough you could read a very useful book written on Japanese calligraphy. Empty Space: The effective use of empty space, known as “ma” in Japanese aesthetics, is important in calligraphy. Leaving appropriate spaces between characters and strokes adds elegance and balance to the artwork. Hiragana symbols are primarily used for grammatical purposes, with each hiragana symbol representing a syllable as opposed to having a specific meaning. In total, there are forty-six basic hiragana symbols. Shitajiki felt pad: This is a mat placed underneath the paperweight to prevent markings on the sheets below and also provide a smoother surface for writing.

A cloth ( 下敷き, shitajiki ) to place under the paper (often newsprint is used as well) to prevent ink from bleeding through. Calligraphy lessons were studied by aristocrats, poets and samurai. If you ever visit any samurai residences in Japan you can experience calligraphy displays there. Sometimes, a word I write will be so warped and wonky that I feel like I’ve offended all Japanese and Chinese people on earth and in history. I can’t even write them a note to apologise – it would just cause more offence.

The oldest existing calligraphic text in Japan is the inscription on the halo of the Medicine Buddha statue in the Hōryū-ji Temple. This Chinese text was written in Shakyōtai ( 写経体) style, prominent in the Chinese Six Dynasties period. The Japanese kana calligraphic system is comprised of symbols that are much simpler than kanji symbols. The system was created by combining hiragana symbols and katakana symbols. Use of more or a consistent amount of ink depends on the artist’s preference. Japanese Calligraphy Tools Balance and Proportions: Achieving balance and proper proportions between the different elements of the characters is crucial. This includes the size and positioning of strokes, as well as the spacing between characters.

Take good care of your calligraphy brush, because the hairs are very delicate. After each session you should rinse your brush under tap water in the same way as when you open a new brush.Posture: Maintaining proper posture is important. The calligrapher should sit upright, with a stable and grounded position. Shodo is reliant on the technique of the brush strokes, the flow of brush and ink, the accurate composition of characters, the way the brush is handled, the shading of the ink, the placement of the characters…the list can go on and on and on.
