no greater diameter than 0.25 times the depth of the joist; should be drilled at the neutral axis2 ; and As part of any new installation work or a re-wire, a cable, trunking or cable tray sometimes has to pass through an element of building construction, such as a floor, wall or beam, necessitating the formation of a notch or opening in the element. Most of these drills do not automatically come with drill bits, and that is okay. There are plenty of inexpensive options that exist. Just remember: the better the quality, the cleaner the cut and less damage to you floor joists: Position bathroom vent fans so the ducts can run parallel to the joists—right up to where they exit the house. Where and how to drill joists for electrical cables or plumbing runs depends on what type of floor framing you have. Keep the hole at least 2 in. from the top and the bottom if it’s a dimensional lumber joist. The hole cannot be larger than one-third the depth of the joist, so the maximum hole size for a 2×12 joist (actual size 1-1/2 x 11-1/4 in.) is 3-3/4 in. diameter—plenty big enough for running cable! You can drill the holes anywhere along the length of the joist (first photo).

How do you work around that obstacle? One option is to simply drill from the more complicated side instead. But if that bay is too small to insert your drill into, follow these steps: It should be noted that notches or holes should not be cut in roof rafters, other than at supports where the rafter may be birdsmouth3 to a depth not exceeding 0.33 times the rafter depth. Plenty of trial and error plus a healthy dose of engineering and testing have gone into the official rules in the building code. Here we’ll examine the rules. This cordless drill is built with a brushless motor and designed for the 20V/60V MAX* FLEXVOLT Battery System. It is designed for drilling through studs and joists, typically required during electric, data, and plumbing installations. But it is entirely possible that you can weaken a joist enough that it falls apart, making that part of your floor very dangerous. That is why drilling through the joist is discouraged unless no other option exists. Besides, drilling sometimes multiple holes takes work, and quite frankly a few easier options exist when they are available. Inspect for the following possibilities first:

Sometimes, however, drilling through a floor joist is about notches, not holes, depending on the type of construction you are doing. In this case, you may be surprised to know that notches need to be smaller than holes. One-sixth of the joist’s height, to be exact. The neutral axis of a joist lies along is the centre line of a joist and is where the joist has neither a compressive or tensional stress One final thought: this is meant to be a general guide, but exact measurements and regulations can vary by state and even county. Always consult your local code book for: Keep the measurements the same, if possible. You want to keep the heights exactly the same, especially for water pipes.Another thing to keep in mind is that drilling your hole exactly on the middle line is more of a preference than a requirement. Often you will find that a previous electrician stapled a wire horizontally across the joist along the middle line for convenience. That’s not to say that Milwaukee’s design is perfect. It just gives you that little bit of extra clearance to reach a few more places than you can with this. More Muscle for New Construction

speed transmission (0-300 rpm & 0-1,250 rpm) for enhanced control and speed. Drill time of 2.64 seconds for 65mm holes In 50 x 254mm wood gives high productivity Please Note: Every care was taken to ensure the information was correct at the time of publication. Any written guidance provided does not replace the user’s professional judgement. It is the responsibility of the dutyholder or person carrying out the work to ensure compliance with relevant building regulations or applicable technical standards. Drill through, but slowly so you can listen carefully in case you made a mistake and start to hit the obstacle. Where larger notches and holes in joists should be and how they should be made Rules for Notches in JoistsAt some stage of the electrical installation, there will need to be chases made in the walls of the building as shown in Fig 4. If that be the case, keep in mind you need a straight-line path through each joist. This makes the job looker neater for electrical work. For plumbing, it is absolutely critical. Steel pipes, after all, are not easily flexible. Here are some tips to make sure you establish a nice and clean route for your joist holes: And that is it! The wire is secure and you are done in a few minutes. No need to carry around a drill. Just keep in mind this method will only work for wires, not pipes. However, the different attachments are the best value here. You can easily switch out to a jigsaw attachment with a couple of different blade options . If your next project will involve both drilling holes and cutting notches, this is the way to go. DeWalt

If neither of the first two options exist, take one last look around. Odds are unless this is new constructions, other wires already exist. A previous contractor may have already drilled a hole for his own wire that was bigger than it needed to be. Do not drill another hole, since that will further weaken the joist anyway. Amoolo– Good for the small stuff like ethernet and small electrical wires. Also efficient at drilling a pilot hole if you just want to see how dense the wood is first before drilling your main, larger hole.

Please follow these rules when notching joists. This also applies to wall studs for concealed showers etc…
