MR11 LEDs are smaller than MR16 meaning they are not as bright but allow them to be fitted into smaller downlights. An MR11 has a diameter of 35mm compared with the 50mm diameter of the MR16. The advantage of the MR11 is that they allow for smaller, less obtrusive holes to be cut into a ceiling. When purchasing any downlight it is important to consider their fire rating. Fire rated fittings are a legal requirement in new build homes and extensions. They are designed to stop the spread of fire as when you install downlights you are cutting holes into your ceiling and creating an opening which fire can pass through. If you find a range of numbers, say, for example, 30-50VA. The 30 is the minimum load rating, while the 50 is the maximum load rating. The total power consumption of your new bulb must be within this range.
