It is much more difficult to filter the water in a vivarium than it is the water in an aquarium. The water in a reptile or amphibian habitat generally holds far more particulate matter than an aquarium does. This can bog-down underpowered filters, leaving your pet’s water dirty. Personally, I prefer to begin by providing the proper amount of heat to a habitat. I then tweak the amount of ventilation and water added to maintain appropriate conditions. I err on the side of too much ventilation, rather than too little, as I don’t mind adding more water to the habitat as necessary. Using Fans in Rainforest Vivaria We’ll discuss ventilation in a later article. For now, let’s concentrate on methods by which you can increase the amount of water you add to the habitat. The three most effective ways to do so include: To achieve the correct temperature, we recommend setting up a heat bulb at one end of the enclosure. For safety, you must ensure that your reptile is unable to touch the heat source, as this can of course lead to serious burns and injuries. You can prevent this from happening with the help of a protective heat guard.

Most reptiles suitable for rainforest vivaria should be provided with constant access to clean, fresh drinking water. But you must provide this water in a sensible manner and employ good hygiene practices to prevent your pet from falling ill. Different types of enclosures incorporate different amounts of screened area. Most aquariums and commercially manufactured enclosures replace one of the glass, plastic or wooden sides with screen. But other enclosures – especially custom-built units – incorporate relatively little screen. Hygrometer: A hygrometer is a humidity measuring device that helps monitor and maintain the humidity levels in the vivarium. Regularly monitoring humidity levels using a hygrometer is important to ensure they remain within the appropriate range for the vivarium inhabitants. This allows for timely adjustments to misting methods, ventilation, or other factors to maintain a healthy humidity environment.

It's important to research the specific humidity requirements of the specific animal in your vivarium and adjust the humidity levels accordingly to provide them with an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. Tropical Vivariums Tropical environments typically have high humidity levels. In these vivariums, the humidity range should often be maintained between 60% and 80%, and will sometimes near 100% in the evening. This higher sustained humidity allows for proper hydration and supports the growth of tropical plants and animals. Temperate Vivariums

Additionally, this is typically done to avoid elevating the humidity level of desert-style terraria. But high humidity levels are typically desirable in rainforest vivaria, so it is wiser to simply leave the bowl in the habitat on a permanent basis. It is very important to use a good quality silicone sealant to seal all the seams of your vivarium. This is important in any wooden vivarium, but as chameleons need to be kept at a higher humidity than some other commonly kept reptiles it’s absolutely vital. Allow the sealant at least 24 hours to cure – it’s safe to install your decor and heating equipment once the smell of vinegar has worn off. Best vivarium for snakesAutomatic misting systems are designed to deliver controlled amounts of water into the vivarium at regular intervals. They offer several advantages.

Most plants and captive reptiles and amphibians require drinking water, but some also require water for soaking or swimming. Once you’ve decided on the best type of vivarium for your pets, you must start trying to determine the best ways to provide them with the water they require. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the air inside the habitat contains enough moisture. Before you select the wooden vivarium best suited for your new pet, it’s worth taking a few minutes to consider the following: For those wanting an even more exciting home for their dragon, we do supply an extra-large wooden vivarium – 183 x 61 x 61cm (72 x 24 x 24”). If you have the space, this is definitely the one to go for. Best vivarium for a chameleon Accordingly, you’ll need to ensure that the air in your vivarium is refreshed more-or-less constantly. This will ensure that all of the organisms in the habitat will remain healthy and thrive. It includes your pets, the plants and all of the microorganisms lurking in the substrate. Temperate vivariums aim to replicate moderate climates and require humidity levels in the range of 40% to 60%. This range provides a balance between moisture and dryness, catering to a variety of species that prefer moderate humidity levels. Often these setups will be misted once or twice a day, but with enough ventilation that water droplets evaporate after a few hours. arid VivariumsI highly recommend using an automated misting system. I’ve been using the Repti-Zoo 10L for years. They are straight forward to setup, and offer a convenient and efficient way to maintain humidity, providing consistent moisture levels for your plants and inhabitants. MistKing is another popular brand for mist systems. Benefits of automatic misting systems The Viv-Exotic range covers the vast majority of useful sizes of vivariums. The Viva+ and AAL ranges have an innovative design of vents that allow for equipment cables to be routed through securely and are very secure when assembled correctly. The main purpose of ventilation in a vivarium is to maintain temperature. You can tell whether or not your vivarium requires more ventilation by observing your reptile’s behavior. Any time you allow the air inside your vivarium to mingle with the air outside the habitat, the enclosure will lose two things to the surrounding environment: water and heat. Compatibility: Consider the size of the misting system and its water reservoir with the vivarium's size, species, and specific humidity requirements. If you have to refill the water reservoir every few days, it makes sense to get a larger reservoir. The first step is usually mechanical filtration, which seeks to remove particulate matter from the enclosure. This is typically accomplished by forcing the water through some type of filter media that acts as a sieve. A fine screen may also be placed over the inlet to prevent animals and large items from entering the filter.Animals living in habitats that provide improper ventilation and humidity levels often suffer from respiratory infections. Respiratory infections can occur in pet reptiles and amphibians for a number of reasons, including exposure to infected animals and stress,. But improper ventilation or humidity can also cause such problems. Condensation You can use plants, corkbark, branches or other items to hide the water dish and sidestep this problem. Screen will provide plenty of open space for air to flow into and out of the habitat, while still preventing your pets from escaping. Screen is not always secure enough for very large or potentially dangerous species (such as venomous snakes). But it is usually adequate for the types of frogs, lizards, small snakes that are typically kept in rainforest vivaria. Cleaning Equipment: Regularly clean the spray bottle or mister to prevent the growth of bacteria or mold. Use distilled water or a water conditioner to avoid the buildup of mineral deposits that may clog the sprayer nozzle. A suitable vivarium set up is probably the most important thing to take into account when bringing a reptile, amphibian or exotic pet into your home.
