In this post we are going to road test and review their latest offering, the Akaso Brave 8. We will examine what features this epic piece of kit offers, what it could be used for, and crucially whether it is worth the investment.

For the price (there’s that phrase again), the video quality from the Akaso Brave 7 is pretty good. You don’t get the same level of control as you do from a GoPro, but few riders want to faff about with ProTune, LUTs and time-consuming post-processing. Slap the Akaso on your bike then hit record and unless you’re used to high-end kit, you’ll not be disappointed. The camera powers off automatically even when the remote control is activated in the menu, so be sure to change the auto power-off setting. On paper, at least, the Akaso Brave 8 looks as though it would compare relatively well with a more premium action camera such as the GoPro Hero 10, but in reality, it comes second in almost every department. We are planning to use ours film DJ sets and crowd reaction next month in Goa at the legendary and still awesome trace parties. Vloggers also love the Akaso 8 as it allows them to talk clearly whilst strolling around. For me, sound quality has long been the achilles heel of action cameras but then again, as a music producer and audiophile I would say that. So for me, it’s a pretty important thing to mention on my Akaso Brave 8 review. It can easily be fitted using the in box accessories and attached to bicycle handle bars before you go for a ride or wedged not your helmet before you go our skateboarding. Swarovski NL Pure10x42 review: sensational high-end binoculars for wildlife spotting and spectator sports The supplied remote control is charged via a micro-USB port, which is a shame but not a problem assuming you have a cable at home, as one isn’t supplied. I’ve got three GoPros (all of which I’ve bought myself) – a Hero 3+, a 5 and a 7, so while I can’t compare this Akaso to the most recent Heroes, I was pretty excited at the idea of upgrading my current kit for less money.

AKASO Affordable Sports Action Camera | Best GoPro Alternative - AKASO

When it comes to the accessories that come with that camera, the Akaso Brave 8 is miles ahead of the competition. There is absolutely loads of stuff in the box. So much so that I have to admit that I was scratching my head wondering what half of it was. Purists will be disappointed to find no 24fps option for a filmic style, but I do miss 25fps, which is what I edit all my footage in. The Akaso Brave 7’s in-built microphones give appalling audio quality; speech is very quiet and wind noise is totally uncontrolled. This is a real shame as the front-facing screen could make this great for vlogging, if that’s your thing, but as it comes it’s pretty much useless. Controlling the camera via the app is pretty straightforward, and as it gives a live view of the camera, it makes framing shots relatively easy. To connect to your phone you have to create an account, but once done it takes you through steps and it’s easy to use. The app community has a credits system that makes it look a bit like BangGood, but overall it works and isn’t too laggy. The Insta360 One R changed the way I shoot action on a motorcycle, but it’s expensive and the lenses are vulnerable. If you’re serious about getting great angles with the minimum of fuss, and you can afford it, this – or the Insta360 One X2 – is my recommendation.

Akaso Brave 8 Review: A Cheaper Alternative to a GoPro?

The boldly beautiful Akaso Brave 8 comes with built-in image stabilisation, and offers waterproofing down to depths of 10 metres or 33 feet without even needing an additional case! One of the most consistent Action Camera makers and a serious rival to the Kingdom of GoPro is Akaso who have now released sequential generations of action cameras, each one a bit better than the last. The remote (annoyingly) takes an older microUSB cable, while the camera and battery charger take the current USB-C, a hint that the remote is something of a hangover from an older model. The mounts are very similar to GoPro items, although the system isn’t quite as robust, allowing the camera to be twisted out with relatively little force, and a good fit needs two small sets of lugs to engage – something that could be easily overlooked in more extreme use. There is good news though, the Akaso Brave 8’s whopping sensor does indeed deliver the goods, especially in terms of photos, which are impressively good given the compact size of the camera. Even in the low light levels of UK winter the images still avoid looking too muddy, and the detail is clear in every shot. The 8K time lapse video has to be the standout here too, giving next-generation video quality to a popular shooting format. We mentioned the built in image stabilisation and it does seem to be doing its job reducing the excess jitteriness that tends to come with action videos. Two batteries are supplied with the Akaso, and can be charged via USB-C while in the camera, or pop them into the two-port charger that comes with it. Akaso has launched the latest version of its action camera range, the Akaso Brave 8. It is being marketed as a cheaper alternative to the Go Pro 10 and, in this review, we are going to look at the pro and cons of the camera and whether it really is a suitable alternative to more premium brands or whether you are better off saving for a little bit longer to get the market leading product. Akaso Brave 8 Specifications While you don’t get the control of a high-end camera, you can adjust exposure from the sub-menu up or down two stops, in single stop increments, and choose from five preset white balances, or leave it on auto.
