About this deal

What would you do if out of the blue you discovered that your mother, a self proclaimed “only child,” had a sister? If you were Steve Luxenberg and an investigative reporter, you would start researching your family in earnest. Everyone Has Standards: The ghosts did want Alison and Mike out of the house in the first episode, but (save for the Captain) they are very unhappy that Julian pushed Alison out of a window and nearly killed her. Platonic Life-Partners: Fanny and the Captain have shades of this dynamic. They get along with each other better than they get along with the others, they have the same sense of humor and the Captain states in series 3 that he knows Fanny "better than anyone". a b c d e f Ben Allen. I had my favourite dish of scampi and chips which was delicious with a locally brewed pint to wash it down.

Right Behind Me: Alison's "God, I hate estate agents!" before remembering one is standing right behind her. He doesn't mind. I hadn’t researched the mental institutions of the first half of the 20th century, so reading Steve’s descriptions in Annie’s Ghosts was eye opening and disturbing. Throughout the book Steve provides us with an honest look at the attitudes of society towards mental illness in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Not content with just stating the facts, he puts the story into the context of time and place. He describes Eloise, the mental institution where Annie lived much of her adult life and interviews health professionals to learn about Annie’s condition. He reaches out to anyone who can shed light on the secret and in the process comes to terms with his mother’s secret. BBC iPlayer sets new festive record - with drama box sets and Christmas specials driving best festive week and best festive day viewing ever".In "Bump in the Night", Mike is terrified when the ghosts accidentally make him believe that there are twenty burglars in the house. Scoutmaster Pat is in a melancholy mood as he prepares for a visit by members of his living family for his 'death day': his widow (who is now married to the man with whom she had an affair), Pat's son, the son's girlfriend, and the couple's baby boy. Mike tells Alison that he hates being watched by the ghosts, especially when using the toilet. Builders start work on the house, but the ghosts try to make them leave. Alison's struggle to filter out the ghosts leads the builders to consider her eccentric and rude. Naive Georgian noblewoman Kitty asks around to learn where babies come from and gets a variety of unhelpful answers. After meeting his grandson, who has been named in his honour, and making peace with that part of his past, Pat appears to begin moving on to the afterlife, only to learn the light shining on him is a lamp used by the builders. Fed up with Alison, the builders quit.

Mary tells the others about her dream of moving on in “The Thomas Thorne Affair” as well as Annie moving on and counting their blessings before they all move on, too in “Speak as ye Choose”. Two episodes later, Mary herself moves on. Embarrassing Animal Suit: The Christmas special sees Mike forced to wear a reindeer onesie for the occasion, much to his displeasure. Robin (who, for context, is a caveman dressed in animal skins) comments that "He look like dumb animal!"Montages: “Speak as ye Choose” has one of Mary and Annie insulting people in Button House and its grounds over the years, including Kitty and Eleanor’s father as well as Thomas on the day he died.

With money running low, Mike and Alison allow the filming of a regency period drama in the house, Life of Byron. The ghosts react in different ways to the action in their home. Romantic poet Thomas is driven to despair by his hatred of Lord Byron and Alison's crush on the lead actor. Julian pesters Alison to place a bet on a horse race for him. Pat teaches Mary about the art of filmmaking and discovers she has a natural talent. Robin the caveman is distracted by the studio lights, and struggles for dominance over the gaffer. Lady Fanny, unlike Kitty, is unhappy about the sex scene enacted in the bedroom. Meanwhile, Mike and Alison fail to inform the production of weight limitations imposed on the structure by the surveyors. Eventually, part of the floor collapses and the film crew promptly leaves. No Honor Among Thieves: On the day The Captain died, he gets caught by other officers for wearing stolen badges. He dies in shame and without being honoured a hero. It took 78 years to admit the truth about himself to the other ghosts.
