I started Little Red whilst I was at university in my second year of my BA in illustration. The class were given a project to create a book in six weeks – that was it, a very open brief. Quite a few people in our class decided to give our brief a bit more structure by taking the opportunity to base it around a live brief or a competition. This is when I heard about the Macmillan prize for illustration. Bethan Woollvin won the Macmillan Prize for Illustration in 2014 for Little Red – her classy, bold interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood. It was a startlingly confident debut which she followed with an equally striking and feminist take on Rapunzel, with not a handsome prince in sight, followed by her twist on Hansel and Gretel. She is also the illustrator of The Button Book by Sally Nicholls and Meet the Planets by Caryl Hart. The eldest in a family of ten children, Bethan understands well what appeals to a variety of age groups, and all her work exudes a natural dry wit and charm. She graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015 and now lives in Sheffield.

REVIEW: Little Red By Bethan Woollvin - Nathan Reading Journey REVIEW: Little Red By Bethan Woollvin - Nathan Reading Journey

I was first introduced to this book a couple months ago, in my picturebook class. We looked at the shapes, the colors, how we moved from verso to recto along with the book. For those picturebook nerds like me, this is a great example of Molly Bang's ten rules and why they work. Little Red is an important retelling of the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood, encouraging children to find joy in how the same classic story can be told in different, innovative ways. Lynn Roberts-Maloney has retold many traditional tales in novel ways, including Cinderella, an Art Deco Fairy Tale and Rapunzel, a Groovy 1970s Fairy Tale. David Roberts – her brother – has illustrated many of her texts and is a significant, award-winning illustrator also known for illustrating the Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty. Little Red is bursting with historical 18th-Century English detail and has a strong female protagonist. Links and Themes: This is a beautiful read and the illustrations are gorgeous. Unlike the traditional tale where the girl was saved by a woodcutter, here the little girl thinks no wolf should harm any kid. This is a very thoughtful and insightful story and I liked this ending better than the traditional tale. This type of tale will empower any gender and any child can think they can be brave and can stand for themselves. As for what I’d do differently, that is a tough question. I think artists in general are always looking for ways to improve and refine their artwork, but since Little Red has received such a warm reception, it reassures me that I wouldn’t change a thing! To keep experimenting with your creativity, using different mediums and platforms, especially whilst you’re still at university!I also spent a while researching fairy tales and their structure, before I decided upon Little Red Riding Hood. The perfect gift for fans of darker fairy tales, complete with tree-shaped cover flaps that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. Printed using rich pantone colours, the graphic illustrations in Little Red offer a bold, visually arresting interpretation of the classic story by Bethan Woollvin, the winner of The Macmillan Prize for Illustration 2014. About This Edition ISBN: Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. This rendition of Little Red Riding Hood is a little disturbing (not that the original isn't!). The Red-is-victorious outcome common in most modern retellings of the story has a slight twist in this version. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I can see some kids really enjoying this one.

A witty twist on a favourite fairy tale, Little Red was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book . The perfect gift for fairy tale fans of all ages , complete with tree-shaped cover flaps, and bright, bold colours that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. The classic tale of the two children abandoned in the forest, and their frightening encounter encounter with an evil witch, has lost none of its popularity over the years.

In total, it’s been about two years! The highlight of the process really was receiving the advance copies of my book, holding it in my hands and thinking about how far it’s come! Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel. Text Rationale:I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story. Eager to discover whether the prince rescues the slumbering princess, Ella Bella waits for the other children to leave and then opens Madame Rosa’s enchanted musical box.
