One thing is common between both father and son. They are both trying to build their own castles. The little man is building a castle that holds its own grandeur. Something no other person he knows has built. His father, on the other hand, is working extremely hard to build his own fortune and that for his family. The speaker warn the reader that eventually everyone dies and “[you], yourself, will make more dust” (Milligan, 16).

But if the same happens with his father, my cousin, he won’t be able to take it. First, he would resist the wave trying to wash away his castle. Then, maybe, he would try and fight it. At last, he may beg it to have mercy on him. After all, how can he let a wave wash away the castle that he built from his blood and sweat? This stanza’s final line contains an epigram. The poet employs a personification in the final verse when he writes, “Old age will come and it’s not nice.” The final sentence has both an apostrophe and a contradiction. Poetry has long been a source of inspiration. It evokes emotions in us. Popular opinion suggests poems are all about the way the words sound and feel when you read them. Language is fascinating if you like that sort of thing, and poetry reflects that acutely. How the coupling of a few different words can make interesting sounds and rhymes when we read them in the silence of our minds. You recite it to your betrothed to tell them how much you love them. Tell it to your children to inspire them to greatness - and teach moral tales. It has a place in all our hearts. An unknown person, presumably the poet, encourages the reader to actively make the most of their time in life before it gets taken away. It comprises four stanzas, each of which has four lines. Its rhyme pattern is AABB, which poets commonly use. In the subsequent stanzas, it continues similarly. Dust if you Must was not written by Georgy, it was written by my mother in law mrs Rose Milligan from Lancaster in Lancashire, England The poem was first published in the September 15th – 21st edition of The Lady (magazine) in 1998. One can create a quiet environment inside themselves by painting, writing letters, baking, or planting seedlings. One must be conscious of their needs and wants. At the end of life, nothing is left. Thus one should cherish every second. It is the message the poet wants her audience to take away from her work. My nephew is building his castle near the sea. And he knows a wave might come and wash away his castle. And all that he worked for might whither away, just like that. And if that happens, he won’t retaliate. Breathtaking original music reminiscent of the beauty of James Taylor, some honey from Melody Gardot, a lyrical spice of The poet’s heart ultimately yearns for youth’s transience. She claims that “ this day will not come around again” because of this.

Throughout the first three paragraphs, she uses the word “dust” in a fun way. And in the last one “dust” represents your final form once you are dead (which sounds a little creepy). Overall, the poem is full of words of wisdom for all people running in the race of life, who have, somehow, forgotten to live. Dust if You Must – Form, Structure, & Meter I was reading the poem again and listening to it, as well. I enjoyed it both as an audio and as a reading. Great poem! 👌😊 I can add 2 links for completing the author’s biography, but they give scarcely any information on her, either. Probably, she was born in the 1940s, in Lancaster, Lancashire, her poem was published in the magazine “The Lady”., 15/09. 1998. A bit more see here: megalomaniacwriter.wordpress.com/tag/rose-milligan However, the poet uses a mixed metrical pattern in her poem. She uses both the iambic meter and trochaic meter. In some lines, the anapestic meter is also present. The first line of each stanza begins with a trochaic foot and the rest of the line either contains iambic feet or anapestic feet. The overall poem is composed of iambic tetrameter. Apart from the major meter, there are also some variations in the poem. This recording would also not be possible without many generous contributions, both privately and from our Indiegogo crowd fundaiser. We can’t thank you enough.

This poem makes me ashamed that I haven't done more with my life. Awesomely conceived and brilliantly delivered. I hope Rose was or has been able to live her own life to the fullest. Here, the poet alerts the readers about its cruel nature. It makes a person weaker day by day and in the end, the person dies. Death is an unavoidable landmark in one’s life. When it comes, there’s no way out. It turns humans into dust. For this reason, the poet urges readers to seize the moment before it fades away. Fun rhyming poems are always good! But this one reminds us of every kids' room ever! They are so tough to keep tidy. We think this poem should be shared with children all over the world in a bid to get them to tidy their rooms. Share it with the messy children in your life, then start your decluttering project together.
