Description

The main changes versus the GF2 - apart from the obvious size/weight reduction and design overhaul - include the omission of the flash hot-shoe / accessory terminal and the rear-mounted thumb-wheel, and the inclusion of a scroll wheel around the four-way pad, a first on a Panasonic Lumix G Micro System camera. Another change to the user interface is that the Up button is now dedicated to exposure compensation rather than ISO sensitivity, which may dismay some enthusiasts. The central middle-cut toothed CUTTER BAR PRO is a special bar especially designed for professional use. The Panasonic DMC-GF3 uses a resistive touchscreen to provide mode selections, and as such that there is not a mode dial on the camera. Many features are no longer controlled by dials and buttons and wheels, but via the 3-inch touchscreen (460k- dot) at the rear of the unit. [3]

This does surprise us somewhat, as we’d rather expected to see the GF3 share the same (and also new) 16.2MP sensor employed by the G3 – especially given how well that performs in low-light. We can only speculate that the reason the GF3 doesn’t use the same chip as the G3 is as a point of differentiation between the two models, one that helps to establish the G3 as the more enthusiast-orientated option of the two. Panasonic DMC-GF3 Review - Digital Photography Review Panasonic DMC-GF3 Review - Digital Photography Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 is an even more obvious attempt to woo compact camera owners looking to upgrade to the new breed of DSLR-like models than the GF2 was, who will be attracted by the tiny body design, cutting-edge touchscreen and pared-down user interface. Original GF1 owners, on the other hand, will find even less to like than with the GF2, so much so that Panasonic themselves have hinted at a future GF-series camera designed specifically for enthusiasts - those users should consider the new DMC-G3 instead. On the other hand, the diminutive size, speedier auto-focus, new GUI and feature-set and arguably more attractive design may outweigh the main negatives of losing the flash hot shoe, accessory port, stereo microphones and dedicated ISO button for some users.
