Join Katie Morag McColl and her family on the Isle of Struay in this beautiful gift collection of classic stories. Sea Change: The Summer Voyage from East to West Scotland of the Anassa (Canongate 1999 / Birlinn 2009), a six-week voyage down the Caledonian Canal and out to sea, undertaken to mark her leave-taking of Coll at the end of the 1990s. The book is set on a fictional island called the Isle of Struay so children can actually use their map skills and locate the island on a map. This makes it more real for them to work and develop their learning. The book has a map at the beginning of the book which shows where the different places in the Isle of Struay is. It also uses a lot of illustrations which is really good as children can see and understand all about the island. Based on the fictional Island of Struay, the Katie Morag books are a fun way for pupils to get acquainted with island life in Scotland. There are loads of adventures and characters to enjoy. This is a great way to promote discussion on the differences between these settings and begin comparing island and mainland life. You can also encourage learners to write their own sentences about the place to get them thinking deeper about possible comparisons. This activity would make an excellent paired task, or individual learners could complete it on their own.
