About this deal

My only disappointment was the reveal at the end wasn’t as grand, it was a little predictable, but I still wanted that AHA! moment. Anyway, this book was so much fun that it could’ve been written specifically for me as it had so many things I enjoy in it; Victorian artefacts, museums, a swoony love interest, a creepy villain & a desperate race to uncover the truth & try & survive! If magic is thrown into a story, it has to either be a defining role or weaved well into the world-building so that there is a sense of believability of its place in the mystery. Otherwise, the resolution just feels lazy and unfinished. Welcome to the reality game show that'll scare you to death! Have you got what it takes to last the night?

She has a long-standing love affair with all things scary, reading Point Horrors at primary school before graduating to Stephen King in her misguided teens. Classic 90s and 00s horror movies are definitely her pub quiz strong point and her first love may well have been Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Studying for a degree in Art History and Archaeology meant that she developed a thirst for anything old, beautiful and very often dead. She tries to combine this with contemporary settings in her writing to make unique and chilling modern stories. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments But that last part… I am sorry, so far the book was fantastic, awesome, WOW, but then you decided to add the little sister in the mix? While SHE FREAKING KNEW that things just weren’t going right? What is up with that? It just didn’t make sense, it was dumb. I am sorry. But I would have rather seen our trio fix things instead of this. And sure, I'll briefly skim over Jessica, Jasmine, Meghan and Will. Why? Because they were flat, one-dimensional walking tropes. Jessica was the classic "best friend", Jasmine was the classic "mean girl" (with a side dose of kleptomanic tendencies that is never explored??) , Meghan was the stereotypical "extroverted, adoring sister" and Will was the "wronged suspicious lanky dude" . And I think that about sums them up to be honest.I devoured both Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis and Good Girls Die First by Kathryn Foxfield. They both had that feeling reminiscent of a really good teen horror movie and I couldn’t put them down. I’m also excited for The Cousins by Karen McManus, as I have loved her previous books. The only link is to a girl called Niamh. She's been near these girls, even talked to them but the only thing they all have in common is that they all look like 'Irish girl' (Niamh). Alrighty, this is the first book review I've written on Goodreads, because I think it'll be fun to rant about. Though I think, after re-reading this review again, it turned into more of an analysis. Oops. It’s so hard to write a spoiler-free review for this book, because I want to share everything I felt while reading it. Niamh was a character I really liked, and she was very easy to relate to as well. I went in for a YA thriller and I got a supernatural horror that kept me on my toes.

According to author Joseph Persico, Gunther was one of at least 2,738 troops and 320 Americans to die on the Western Front in the war’s final day, most of them in the six hours between the armistice signing and enactment. Persico wrote in Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour that the death toll surpassed the daily average on the Western Front. “It seems so foolish,” Corporal Harold Pierce wrote of his experience on the war’s final day, “to keep up the killing till the last minute.”One of Us is Lying meets This Lie Will Kill You but with a chilling supernatural twist that will keep you guessing until the very end . . . The storyline was good and exciting. The only problem I had was the scary parts. It wasn't scary enough for me. I couldn't feel the ice-cold feeling when you been scared for one scene. It was like a normal thriller book. This is one of those books where you’ll have a theory, be eager to know the villain, and see your theories change at least three times. I made so many prediction, and got it correct in the end, but even then I still had to wait until the end to confirm it and get a satisfying explanation. Stamping a supernatural creepy modern twist on the Point Horrors of old and giving a fresh modern voice to the genre, Last One To Die is a proper suspenseful scare fest that had me hiding under the covers on more than one occasion! Determined to make it through her Drama Course, Niamh is placed at the Victorian Museum to put her drama skills to the test, and there she meets Tommy: he’s kind, fun, attentive, and really hot! Nonetheless, there’s something eerie about the museum…

TikTok sensation Cynthia Murphy's debut The Last One to Die has been hailed "Point Horror for a new generation", winning the Redhill Trust Book Award and Lancashire Book of the Year 2022. The Germans kept watch on the American soldier who suddenly rose to his feet and charged toward the machine-gun nest with his fixed bayonet. Gunther’s comrades yelled at him to stop as did the bewildered Germans in broken English. Didn’t he know the war was minutes from its end? If he heard the pleas, Gunther ignored them. Elle pensait vivre le meilleur ete de sa vie… ce sera peut-etre le dernier.Niamh, 17 ans, a travaille comme une dingue pour pouvoir se payer des cours d’ete dans la plus grande ecole d’art dramatique de Londres. Nonetheless, there's something eerie about the museum.

I am happy that the author told us how Niamh was pronounced. I am sorry, but I just don’t know any Irish people. And I live in Dutch-speaking country. XD I was already prepared to google it and see what was up, but I am happy I didn’t have to do that. I wish I had done more research as I actually didn't realise this was a YA thriller and I am normally let down by those - they seem to be romance driven and just not very good, in my opinion. This is a real cat and mouse type of read, throw in a paranormal element and you've got yourself a fantastically terrifying thriller.

Last One to Die was a fun and easy read. I really liked the combination of Supernatural/Murder-Mystery, with a hint of romance. Shortly after 5 a.m. on November 11, 1918, German, British and French officials gathered inside a railroad dining car in a dark forest north of Paris and signed an armistice to end World War I. Rejecting German calls to immediately halt hostilities, Allied commander Ferdinand Foch dictated that the guns would fall silent at 11 a.m. in part to allow news of the cease-fire to be transmitted to the front lines. The friendship with Jess, the family closeness and the love interest scenes were a wonderful addition to the suspense we get, like breathing a bit of fresh air as well. I loved it when scenes made me giggle or give me the butterflies. It was very light as well, which helped break the scary moments and make you believe everything was good, before another plot twist happened.
