About this deal

It should come as no surprise that the Porlex Mini has a very limited grinding capacity. With a maximum of 20g of coffee at once, you can only get about 1-3 cups of coffee per grind, depending on your preferences.

However, in this day and age, we have seen an explosion of affordable steel-burr grinders with bearings (such as the Timemore C2), and for that reason, it can’t keep up with the competition anymore. The cups from the grinder are sweet and have excellent clarity and texture. There’s still some way up to the models from 1Zpresso and Comandante, but overall, the cups are still awesome. If you are looking to dial in a very specific espresso whilst on the road, it may not be accurate enough for that. However, if you’re using a Moka pot, pour over, AeroPress, drip, or even French press brewing method, the Porlex will do a fine job for you. But a coffee grinder needs to be good, as well as practical. So, is this the ultimate coffee travel buddy?Another differentiating factor here is that the Porlex Mini comes with a rubber strap. This serves as a storage solution for the crank lever but many users find it also assists with grip during the grinding process.

An awesome thing about manual grinders is that they are very affordable compared to what you are getting. Think about it. When you buy an electric grinder most of the manufacturing expenses cover the motor, housing, and electric parts – not the burrs themselves. Rather than the more elaborate style of other similar hand grinders like the Comandante, which you can read about right here, the Porlex Mini has the ultimate minimalist aesthetic. Capacity – 3/5

If you have got this far then I’m sure you’re aware of the mechanism and how a manual coffee grinder works. We also love the sharpness of the burrs on the Porlex, allowing the mini to grind faster than many other hand grinders on the market. Build Quality – 5/5

I’m not sure if the plastic is something you need to worry about – besides for aesthetic reasons. It seems well made and is not exposed to excessive force during regular operation. One of the biggest trends in coffee during the last couple of years has been single dosing and zero retention grinders.

There are a bunch of nifty features on the Q2. For instance, the wooden handle knob is magnetic, so it can be taken off for more comfortable transportation. There is an array of manual coffee grinders on the market today all of which do a pretty good job of grinding coffee. The brand also points out that the burrs are made out of special “high nitrogen” steel that’s more durable. Zassenhaus has been making grinders for more than 100 years, so I guess they have learned a thing or two.The fit and finish of the Timemore Chestnut C2 is absolutely first rate across the board. The crank arm and cap attach with certainty and a solid connection to the grinder’s spindle mount. The ribs up the side give the grinder a super solid feel when you’re handling it and cranking away at 100rpm. The grinds catch bin – all metal now – screws easily into the main grinder body and has a quality feel to it all. While this is a good idea, in theory, it doesn’t work well in daily use. The handle is on the shorter side, and the weight and shape of the grinder make itchallenging to hold it steadyon the counter. Again, it does reasonably well and better than you’d expect for the price. It’s not quite at the upper echelon since it still produces a fair amount of fines. However, you can still make tasty coffee with it. The grinder is quite unusual because the handle turns vertically and not horizontally. The aim is to make it more ergonomic to operate.
