The very instant that I saw you did / My heart fly to your service, there resides / To make me slave to it and for your sake / Am I this patient log-man’ (Ferdinand, 3:1) With the king asleep, Antonio persuades Sebastian that this is a good opportunity to kill him. They think Ferdinand has drowned in the storm, which would make Sebastian, as the king’s brother, next in line to take the throne. a b Shakespeare, William; Guthrie,Tyrone (1958). "The Tempest". In Alexander, Peter (ed.). The Comedies. New York: The Heritage Press. p. 4. Shakespeare himself was at the end of his career, and it is hardly possible not to see,...in Prospero's resignation of his magic a reflection of Shakespeare's own farewell to his art. Prospero is the central character in The Tempest and all the action revolves around him. Using magic, he is able to control the movements and all the actions of the other characters, which allows him not only to be the central character but also the actual author of the plot of the play. How does Prospero change throughout The Tempest? A character analysis of Prospero is complicated by his being a magician. So the question is, what are we seeing when we look at Prospero? A complete human being who has to rely on his natural resources, or someone above the need for that, who lives his life by practicing magic?Miranda is Prospero's daughter. She was 3 years old when she and her father were exiled. Now, some 12 years later, she is beginning to blossom into a beautiful young woman. She is an innocent, having never seen another woman and having no knowledge of any other human being, except for her father. She is unaware of her beauty because she does not know what feminine beauty is suppose to look like. Melon Cauliflower, by New Zealand playwright Tom McCrory, is about a man Prospero, in his late sixties, who struggles to come to terms with the death of his wife and has mistreated his daughter Miranda. [11] Meanwhile, Miranda and Ferdinand get married and Prospero invites the Greek Gods along! Clever, just think of the presents! Meanwhile… what is this!?! Meanwhile Island? Much of the above is behaviour with good intentions but still, the effect is the suffering of others. Magic or no magic, he is quite prepared to hurt others. However, ultimately, he is a humane man: he understands that the ability to forgive and be merciful is what makes us human. In the manga series One Piece, a character with the name Perospero appears in chapter 834, partly inspired by Prospero. His mother, Charlotte Linlin also seems to be inspired by the character as she is the one to use magic to control everything on the Island with her soul.

When Prospero was deposed as Duke of Milan and set adrift in a boat he took all his books with him. He studied science for years. Elizabethans believed that if you studied hard enough you could end up knowing everything that there is to know. If you managed that then there was just one step further than knowing everything in the natural world. That was gaining insight into things beyond the natural world, and that was magic. So the books are the key to mastering magic. How does Prospero use magic in The Tempest?

As the moment with Caliban progresses, Miranda rebukes Caliban for the hatred he expresses towards her father: The audience may also have seen Prospero as a type of magus - an educated man who studied science and was believed to gain magical powers through their studies. A magus could use their powers for good or might be tempted to use dark magic. One of the moons of Uranus is named after her, in keeping with other Uranian moons named after Shakespearian characters. Prospero is the main protagonist of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest. He is probably the most unusual of Shakespeare’s major characters in that, although he is a human being with human qualities, including human faults, he has magical powers: he has the ability to control the weather, the conditions on the island on which he lives, and also the actions and movements of people and the spirits who also live on the island. The Tempest Character Descriptions | Shakespeare Learning

In the universe of Warhammer: 40,000 and further fleshed out in The Horus Heresy series, several books take place on a planet called Prospero, home of Magnus the Red and his Thousand Sons Space Marine legion. The citizens of the planet are versed in sorcery and psychic powers, earning them the suspicion and ire of the rest of the Imperium of Man. [10] Slights, Jessica. "Rape and Romanticization of Shakespeare's Miranda." SEL: Studies in English Literature 1500–1900. 42.2 (2001): 357–379. The Tempest interprets Miranda as a living representation of female virtue. Miranda is typically viewed as having believed herself to be subordinate towards her father. She is loving, kind, and compassionate as well as obedient to her father and is described as "perfect and peerless, created of every creature's best". [5] She is, furthermore, the only female character within a cast of strong male figures, and much of her interaction on stage is dominated by the male figures around her. Miranda's behaviour is typically seen as completely dictated by Prospero, from her interactions with Caliban to her ultimate decision to marry Ferdinand. The traits that make her the pinnacle of femininity are her innocence and vulnerability, and these traits allow her to be readily manipulated first by her father then Ferdinand.Prospero is the main character in The Tempest. He is the Duke of Milan who was overthrown by his brother Antonio fifteen years before the start of the play and cast adrift in a boat with his baby daughter, Miranda. During those fifteen years he studied and taught himself how to do magic. Why is Prospero important in The Tempest? Prospero has a close relationship with his daughter. He has educated and cared for her on the island. He is a protective father and, although he approves of Ferdinand as a potential match for Miranda, Prospero still wants Ferdinand to prove himself before he agrees to the marriage. In the beginning of the play, Miranda is presented as an obedient character. However, as the play goes on she disobeys her father several times, including by talking to Ferdinand when she has been told not to and helping him with his physical tasks. Miranda has a close relationship with her father, although they do sometimes disagree and Miranda does disobey him at times. Their isolation on the island means that her father has a strong influence over her life as both her parent and her teacher.
