I found The Salt Road not just very well written, the language skilfully bringing to life the Sahara desert and Morocco, where this historical novel is set, but also thoroughly researched, the author’s personal experiences giving the descriptions a depth that firmly transports the reader into another world. The harsh scenery she paints hooks you not just with its many perils, but it also captures the awe that make so many people fall in love with it.

The outworking of these qualities in their lives and diverse circumstances bring lots of substance to the story. Goulceby owes its names to its first settler, Kolkr the Dane, during the Viking period. Whilst Asterby’s name stems from the Danish word ‘Eystri’, owing to Kolkr’s eastern lands. It's not something I would have bought from a store normally. But I was intrigued both by the idea of the story and the author's history. I am primarily a sci fi and fantasy reader although I love a good historical like Dunnett or Erskine. I adored learning about the Tuareg and could only imagine the hardship of crossing a desert. Not something I would want to do but seen through others eyes, absolutely fascinating. Once, the area around Lüneburg was covered in lush woodlands. But because the medieval salt works depended on wood as a fuel used in boiling and purifying the saline water from which the salt was obtained, much of the forest was cut down. Heather then covered area, helping it to become a landscape that now attracts thousands of visitors when that foliage is in full bloom.
