Her Pink Fiend, a seemingly hollow and jarring creation, is a made-up conscience filled with traditional feminine characteristics. Karbo and the reader laugh at the consumerism that has taken over our lives. It’s worth reading not only for its satire on Hollywood and materialism, but also because it represents the future of American life in a way that’s both funny and relevant to our times. Karbo speaks to the difficulties that we all face when we attempt to achieve our dreams. The struggle to become an adult in The Diamond Lane is well-chronicled.

I read this as a favour to my Mum, who is a teacher. It is intended for 9-12 year olds, and I think it probably suites the lower end of this age range. It read as a book that was written for teaching, in that there are so many themes you could pull out of it to base lessons or discussions around. The novel is a deep dive into the challenges of getting any film made, the capriciousness of the industry and the shallowness of the people inside with a cast of minor characters who walk in and out of the plot, doing whatever they must to get ahead. But she does know a secret – where a treasure is hidden in the theater that is her home. The problem is she isn't the only one looking for it. Catherine "Cat" Royal is a foundling adopted by London's Drury Lane theater, circa the late 1700s. It's a position that lets her mingle with cast, crew, and audience members both high and low. When she overhears theater manager Mr. Sheridan saying how he is hiding a diamond in Drury Lane, her curiosity is piqued, although her discovery and subsequent protection of this diamond isn't exactly what anybody suspects. I wish it had a much more bigger marketing campaign, it could have been almost famous like Harry Potter or Series of Unfortunate Events.This book is beautifully written, exciting and full of interesting historical information and characters. It’s also very funny, Cat’s narration is excellent and vivid. Despite the adventure Julia Golding has not ignored the darker side to Cat’s world which I think is great.
