About this deal

I'm hoping that I can steer some of my young library patrons to this series. I thought the writing was just as good as Wimpy Kid, and I think the overall story is much better. As I said, I also don't see the stereotypes in this first book like I did in Wimpy Kid. Only time will tell if Tom stays the course, or if he walks down the Wimpy Kid road to cruelty. Researching his new idea, "Family, Friends and Furry Creatures", Tom discovers that his grandparents aren't really called the Wrinklies and the Fossils, that his Dad has a guilty secret about Uncle Kevin and a famous footballer, and that his parents ended up together thanks to a piece of cake! I LOVED IT it was super good but i have only read 3 so far but i love them already love them 1.tom gates is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC

I had a 5- and 11-year old giggling along to this in the car over the course of a few school runs. And we've moved straight to book 2 now as well. Ron Weasley (my youngest loved this!) read the book to us, great voice for Tom, young enough sounding and plenty of enthusiasm for the role. I enjoyed this much more with members of the appropriate audience, they are lovely and short as well for a listen, though I know we missed lots of illustrations/diagrams/visual jokes by audio-reading. Some good sound effects though and Grint does the voices very well. And finally, start marking your calendar, because @janesetheridgecame up with one to watch: 'It's not out until April, but I'd recommend Planet Omar by Zanib Mian, illustrated by Nadaya Mafaridik.' We can't wait!I love this book so much I carnt stop reading this book soon as I shown my mum she wanted to read it one time I started LAUGHING MY HEAD OFF I recommend this book for everyone. The book of books for kids that like illustrated stories with a healthy dash of surreal humour could be said to be Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton's The 13 Storey Treehouse series, in which Andy and Terry build ever more irrationally stupendous layers to their treehouse and battle to get their book written for the publisher on time. School is a big part of the Tom Gates universe, and is, of course, extremely relatable for children. The Beaky Maloneseries by Barry Hutchison and Katie Abey is even sillier, and Em Lynas' You Can't Make Me Go To Witch Schoolis full of anarchic magic and tons of laughs. Finally, there's always the fabulous Pamela Butchart, whose writing about school is spot on in terms of humour and observation. For more books about families

The Tom Gatesbooks by Liz Pichon are hugely popular - but if your children or students are looking for something new, which stories could they possibly love as much? We have some ideas, and you shared your thoughts, too... There is a storyline throughout, it follows Tom through a term at school, he is desperate to impress a girl, he wants to see his favourite band 'Dudes 3' live and he wants to make his band "Dog Zombies" really good. Follow his notes as he humiliates his teachers, winds up his sister, gets in and out of trouble and generally has a bot of mischief.

Year 5 or 6 kids will love What Lexie Didby Emma Shevah, in which Lexie negotiates her way in a big Greek Cypriot family, while the books in the Nothing To See Here Hotelseries feature a hilarious family (complete with a troll gran in the attic) that run a hotel for monsters. For more funny books Clarice Bean finds family life exhausting and exasperating, and school is no better; particularly when the teacher, Mrs Wilburton, sets an 'utterly dreary' book project. Great ideas from Tamsin, then - and you didn't disappoint either, coming up with some brilliant suggestions! Here are some of our favourites:

Cute start to a series about Tom Gates, a fifth year student who loves to draw, has a crush on one of his classmates, and is perpetually late to school (and always blames his older sister, Delia, for his tardiness). We understand that buying kids books can be expensive. That's why we offer a wide range of box sets and series at affordable prices, making it easier for parents, teachers, and libraries to access quality books for children. But what will Tom write about? Inspiration strikes when he looks at his excellent collection of ODD OBJECTS and remembers the funny stories behind each one. Starting with Great Great Aunt Aggie's fake bird hat, the weird stone with a hole and his very special doodle pen.
