About this deal

Before you dive into our analysis, just note that we respectively refer to the WF-1000XM5 and WF-C700N as the XM5 and C700N throughout the comparison for the sake of brevity. Tuning my ears to the trebles on “Dust Shuffle” by Brian Eno, I found plenty of detail in the oscillating industrial beat patterning, though things sounded a little sharper and more precise on the Redmi Buds 4 Pro. Boosting higher frequencies in the graphic equaliser successfully increased their prominence but you’ll want to avoid increasing them too much as this left the buds sounding slightly unbalanced.

There’s no auto-pause or play when you take the buds out or put them in, which is another feature we thought might be present on the C700N. It’s slightly disappointing given some rivals do offer this functionality. The Sony WF-C700N are the manufacturer’s cheapest pair of noise-cancelling true wireless earbuds and a step-up from the WF-C500, which received a pretty positive review from me earlier this year. The C700N are rated IPX4 splash-proof like the WF-C500, but also sport Wind Noise Reduction Structure to render calls less distorted in blustery weather, plus Multipoint Bluetooth that allows you to connect wirelessly to two Bluetooth devices at once and then seamlessly switch between them.

Depending on how the earbuds are used, the remaining battery life of the left and right earbuds may differ. Additionally, the available operations may vary depending on the ear the headset is worn on. My other grumble relates to the WF-C700N’s battery life. Seven-and-a-half hours of in-ear stamina is ample, but total playtime of around fifteen hours is below average and means you’ll need to top up the charging case more frequently than you might like. That didn’t detract too much from my overall experience but may prove a deal breaker for those wanting buds capable of lasting a couple of weeks without needing a top up. I'll speak plain: for features, design and most-importantly sound quality, these cannot be bettered for the money. In fact, you'd have to double your outlay to do so. Times have moved on, though, so what are the C700N offering that the WF-C500 aren't? Both offer Sony's Digital Sound Enhancement Engine, which upscales low-res digital files to a higher quality, but the C700N's ANC is a significant point of differentiation between the two. The more expensive model also offer the not-insignificant boon of Adaptive Sound Control, which adjusts ambient audio settings depending on your surroundings. Both the XM5 earbuds and LinkBuds S support multipoint pairing for simultaneous connections with up to two devices. The effect may not be pronounced in a tranquil environment, or some sound may be heard. If there is little ambient noise, it's advisable not to switch on the NC function, as it needs ambient input to work optimally. Cannot hear the other person or the call volume is low during calls/The other person cannot hear you or their call volume is low during calls.

The C700N earbuds can run for 7.5 hours with ANC on and 10 hours with it off according to Sony, but the charging case is a major letdown; it simply matches those above figures for each scenario. Most cases hold at least a few full charges. Sony LinkBuds S Make sure you have the latest firmware updated on your headphones so any bug fixes and improvements will be applied.

Weighing in at 4.6g each, they use on-ear depressable controls instead of touch controls and are IPX4-rated for water resistance. There’s support for Fast Pair on Android and Swift Pair via Windows, which posed no problems during testing, while the pairing processes while using other devices were similarly brisk.
