Made from sorghum grass, the litter has a light wheat-cereal scent that helps minimize odors. While my cats preferred the texture of this sandy, soft litter over the wood litter, they didn't use it consistently day after day during our three-week testing period. Because of their mediocre reception, I'm unable to say whether this kitty litter continues to control odors as it nears time to change it. We’ll get right to the point here: If you have multiple cats, each cat should, at the very least, have access to their own litter box. For example, some cats only react with itchiness and sneezing. Others don’t show these symptoms but persistently avoid their litter box and become grumpy. Known for its biodegradable and compostable nature, corn cat litter is a popular environmentally-friendly cat litter option. Having said that, as much as corn might be a great option for the environment, it’s not always the best option for your cat. PROS of corn cat litter

Wheat is also a good environmentally friendly choice being biodegradable and compostable. 6. Walnut Shells If that’s the case, your feline is merely handling the allergy in its own way. You can test this by changing to a new type of litter and seeing if your cat chooses to use its box again. Hypoallergenic Cat Litter for Cats with Allergies At the moment, we are using OkoCat (Original), and I and my cats love it, but I’ve recently read in several sources that wood/saw dust could be unhealthy (sources not specifically referring to OkoCat). As a precaution, I’m seeking a safe alternative very high quality litter….only the best for my two rescue kitties Lily and Emily. Both of these mean that you will have to completely change the litter far more regularly than you do with non-clumping which can mean that it ends up being a more expensive option. 2. Cleanliness (Dust + Tracking)

Flushable cat litter is more environmentally friendly even if you bag it (in a paper or biodegradable bag) and send it to the landfill instead of flushing it down the toilet. Convenience According to Calder, cats that eliminate outside the litter box are either toileting or marking. Toileting, also called inappropriate elimination, refers to a cat that has found a place to do their business outside of the litter box. Sometimes this behavior can be attributed to a cat's preferences: They may be communicating their disapproval of the location or size of the litter pan, the type of litter in the pan, or the cleanliness of the litter. Cats can develop an allergy to their litter, or they may be born with an allergy that becomes apparent over time. That’s because the cause of allergies is the same for humans and cats alike. Unfortunately, not every cat is willing to switch from the litter they've become used to. Because cats are creatures of habit, when given the choice between a litter made from a familiar material and one made from an unfamiliar material, they'll often prefer the former over the latter, our experts said. This proved true in our testing: My two cats were willing to use the unfamiliar litter only occasionally. This type of litter is made of compressed corn kernels, sometimes combined with particles from other grains such as wheat. A good corn/grain litter produces minimal dust, clumps solidly, fights odors with a natural cereal scent, and is safe if accidentally (or intentionally) ingested by the cat.

Flushable cat litter is touted as a more convenient and sustainable option than conventional clumping litters that must be bagged and tossed in the trash—but is it worth the extra cost? What Is Flushable Cat Litter? Some reviewers mention problems with this litter having mold and fermentation problems that are especially bad in hotter weather. Both Stray Cat Social Club founder Scott Bleicher and Zay Satchu, co-founder and chief veterinary officer at Bond Vet, recommend this litter for multi-cat households. “If you have more than one cat in the house, you should consider multiple boxes. Ideally, pet owners should have one box for every cat plus one,” explains Satchu. Bleicher says he can live with up to ten cats at a time (both his own and fosters) — and knows full well that more cats means more litter maintenance and more potential headaches. Like most experts, he prefers clumping litter because it’s “the easiest to scoop and the best at containing odors,” and particularly likes this “multi-cat strength” formula. He notes that it “contains one ingredient — natural clay — [and] no added dyes, perfumes, or chemicals,” making it more likely to work for a group of cats with different needs and preferences. This litter is currently available as Multi-Cat Plus Extra Odor Control – Large Grains and Multi-Cat – Regular.

Cons: Odors can build up without frequent cleaning, odors become more noticeable around three weeks of use by two cats If you have one cat using the litter box you will need to change your non-clumping litter at least once a week. Frisco Natural Grass Litter: Instead of being instantly absorbed, liquids spread out over the pan. Once fully absorbed, the clumps this litter formed were tight but also wide and shallow, making them more challenging to remove. Sustainably sourced Ökocat Super Soft Clumping Litterhas superior odor control and a texture similar to the clay litters that many cats prefer. Cats need a litter box that is at least 1.5 times their length and has enough space for them to comfortably dig and bury their waste. Regardless of their size, households with more than one cat need more than one litter box, according to Dr. Megan Wilson, a veterinarian at the Pennsylvania SPCA in Philadelphia. A good rule of thumb is one litter box per cat plus one extra. See our guide to the best litter boxes for more on this.Pros: Made from sustainably sourced wood, absorbs odors and emits pine scent, clumps well, soft texture similar to clay litters The search for a “greener” alternative to conventional cat litter is one of the biggest reasons cat owners consider flushable cat litter, according to Derse. Grain-based litters, such as corn, wheat, soy or grass, work fine for some cool kitties, but many cats eat grains and will eat the litter, causing potentially serious digestive problems.
