Lieutenant David Boulton died serving with the Durham Light Infantry during the Battle of Lingevres. Dominic West is best known for paying Jimmy McNulty in The Wire and Noah Solloway in The Affair, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. A brief tally of the damage that he inflicted on the Nazi war machine shows why: Mayne singlehandedly destroyed over one hundred aeroplanes and caused his axis antagonists untold logistical and psychological grief during his time in L Detachment. Corporal Howard Butler, 'M' Section of the Special Boat Section, was awarded the Military Medal in recognition of gallant and distinguished service. He had previously served in No.9 and No.11 Commando.

Within days of officially being informed that Eoin was missing in action, Ambrose was married on December 19 1940 to Patricia “Paddy” Taylor, whom he had met while training in Ballymena. Having served with the RUR, Ambrose joined 12 Commando on May 21 1943, by this point looking for revenge over his brother’s death. 12 Commando was often simply known as the “Irish Commando” because so many of its members were Irish. With the disbandment of 12 Commando, Ambrose’s next posting was to “Layforce II” – a group of small -scale raiding forces brought together to conduct a series of high-risk, hit-and-run raids in Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs) along the French coast and Channel Islands. During December 1943, reconnaissance operations were stepped up for “Operation Overlord” – this was the codename for the Battle of Normandy, the Allied operation to liberate German-occupied western Europe. He also recently appeared in the drama short Rondo earlier this year. Moritz Jahn joins the cast of SAS Rogue Heroes

MCGONIGAL, Eoin Christopher | ͏ - Commando Veterans

Author Martin Dillon was one of the first to question Mayne's sexuality. He told the Belfast Telegraph "Raising questions about his personal life, and conflicted sexuality, were not intended to besmirch his reputation. As I pointed out, there was no evidence he was a practicing homosexual, but I raised questions about his sexuality, as did some of those who served with him." Lance Corporal Alexander Ballantyne was wounded 9 June 1941 during operations with No.11 Commando at Litani River, Syria. After recovering he was assigned from the Commando to Middle East Detachment 2, later redesignated 2nd Special Service Detachment (SSD 2) and was killed in Burma. The troops took off in gale-force winds, intending to parachute behind enemy lines and blow up German aircraft on the ground. While Mayne certainly grated some of his superiors in the military establishment, internal military politics alone cannot explain the reluctance to award the Cross today. Lieutenant George Duncan served No 11 Commando and Layforce before moving to the Special Boat Section as a Temporary Captain. He was awarded the Military Cross Though he suggests that something darker than pure pragmatism may have been animating the blood-sodden Irishman that night. He also plays Sayed in The State and Usman Abboud in the BBC Two series Industry. Paul Boche will play Walter Essner in SAS Rogue Heroes
