Description

Celebrated author/artist Oliver Jeffers, inspired by the birth of his son, presents a picture-book love letter to our planet in this beautiful new book. "Here we are," the narrator informs us, pointing to our blue globe, as it hangs in space. From the land to the sea, from people to animals, all the wonderful, marvelous kinds of creature and thing that go to make up our planet are detailed. So too are various pieces of advice about living in this world of ours, from cherishing the time we have (there isn't much of it) to being kind to the other residents. In the end, on Earth, you are never alone... The sky, sea, land, human body and much more, Oliver Jeffers filled this story with lovely messages of kindness, intertwined with a simple exploration of our world and beyond. This book contains things that the author thinks his baby son needs to know. Make your own set of notes that tell younger children things they need to know. From the skies to the animal kingdom to the people of the world and lots of other beautifully rendered examples of life on Earth, Here We Are carries a simple message: Be kind. -- NPR

I have created literacy graphic organizers for Here We Are. You can find them at my Teachers Pay Teachers store. There are many activities for each literacy area to differentiate depending on your student’s ability/age. They include activities for: O realybė tokia, kad iki šiol nežinau, ar knyga patiko.

Curriculum

And it was strange how in all those shows, all those performances, a whole season's worth, you hardly stopped to think – she never thought about it as she looked at her face in the mirror and placed the tiara, like a regular coronation, in her hair: The sea is right beneath us now. Right beneath us now the waves are swishing and swirling, the fish are darting, the seaweed is swaying this way and that. If the stage were to open up, we'd all go tumbling through to the water.

Take a tour of our beautiful planet and discover its amazing people, creatures, and places in Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth by Oliver Jeffers. The themes of the book include: Insightfully sweet, with a gentle humor and poignancy, here is Oliver Jeffers’ user’s guide to life on Earth. He created it specially for his son, yet with a universality that embraces all children and their parents. Be it a complex view of our planet’s terrain (bumpy, sharp, wet), a deep look at our place in space (it’s big), or a guide to all of humanity (don’t be fooled, we are all people), Oliver’s signature wit and humor combine with a value system of kindness and tolerance to create a must-have book for parents. He bent to kiss her forehead. It was cold to his lips and she made no sign – no smile or frown or flinch – that she knew what he was doing. And he felt that his lips were touching also the cold surface of the water, the deep heedless water under which his father lay, unknowing too. O be reikalo. Knyga žaisminga, skaudi, jauki, stilinga, subtili. Dar daug epitetų čia tiktų, bet viskas į vienus vartus - ji nuostabi.

Get to know us

Illustrated and written by artist, writer, and father Oliver Jeffers as he lovingly welcomes his child to the world. It appears likely the father has been contemplating both the miracle of life and the miracle of our fragile existence on earth. His awe-inspiring art portrays what he feels is important for his child to know about life. His words are few and message subtle. Planet earth, the starry sky and universe, the land and sea. Humanity in all its shapes, sizes, and colors, land and sea animals in all shapes, sizes, colors. A message to be kind to others, to one’s body, and to “look after the earth, as it’s all we’ve got.” Phil Davis did a great job narrating. His voice really fit with the story. However, I prefer narrators with more emotion in their voices. I don’t think that would’ve been as fitting with this story. I might have preferred to read instead of listen to Here We Are. The narrator spoke in a monotone for most of the story, almost as if he was sitting next to me and whispering the story in my ear. That is, when he wasn’t singing popular songs from the variety act in 1959 which the book is about.
