Pasaule ir izveidota perfekti, palīdz arī tas, ka notikumi tiek apskatīti tieši tik daudz cik vajadzīgs grāmatai, neieslīgstot pārmērīgās detaļās. Arī zinātniskās detaļas stāstam ir līmenī, nav nekādu iekšēju pretrunu un uz beigām pazūd arī maģijas piegarša, jo viss top atklāts. It’s hard to talk about too much else without spoiling the twists and turns of the plot, but I will say that the great universal-truth reveals that we get in Lords of Uncreation were incredibly satisfying and what I have been waiting for since reading Shards of Earth two years ago, and that I really enjoyed the development of the characters, especially Idris, Olli, and Havaer. Idris has been alive for about a century, never ageing or sleeping, and though that made being in his point of view very depressing at times, I loved seeing him in the Unspace sequences where the strength of his mind could take control and he didn’t have to deal with his physicality or his emotions. Olli, the disabled machine specialist and captain of the Vulture God, is the character that grew on me the most throughout the series, and the way her story ends up entwined with the mysterious Essiel was a really cool element that brought in extra world-building and upped the tension. And Havaer has interested me from the start, because he gives an insight into the nature of the ever-shifting politics and I enjoyed his calm presence and his heroics. I say effortlessly as it wraps it all up in a huge space opera of politics, fighting and travelling through the ‘unreal’. The characters are fully formed, their continued development is convincing, and the end state of each of them by the novel’s close is both narratively coherent and doesn’t feel ‘forced’ for a neat conclusion. The Final Architecture is a series of science fiction novels by British writer Adrian Tchaikovsky. It comprises Shards of Earth, Eyes of the Void, and Lords of Uncreation. The series focuses on a group of humans fighting against the mysterious Architects, who destroy inhabited planets. The series has been well-received critically, with Shards of Earth winning the 2021 BSFA Award for Best Novel. Tchaikovsky manages to have the incredible task of saving the universe as you know it by more or less regular persons (some human, some not — and even the Unspeakable Aklu, the Razor and the Hook) seem not as ridiculous as it should be, and that’s quite a feat to accomplish. The matters of existential threat and plain human petty power trips are nicely balanced, as are space battles and genuine human (and nonhuman) moments. And he concludes all the storylines in a way that I didn’t quite anticipate, and it works quite well — since at its heart it’s not a story about winning or losing, but about the power of understanding and empathy and bonds between us.

Lords of Uncreation achieves a remarkable turnabout of perspective in which we see Idris looking at the universe from the other side of the real. There he sees everything and achieves a sort of omniscience, not because he becomes a superman but simply because he can imagine himself standing at a point in the center of all things. In a sense, that corresponds to the writer’s imagination, for, after all, what is Tchaikovsky doing but exactly what Idris describes – arranging the unknowable in familiar terms, fitting it out with direction and a landscape that we can imagine ourselves within. Deep within Unspace, where time moves very differently, and what passes for reality is not quite what it seems. The Masters of the Architects, the Originators, are the real danger. They are just becoming aware of all planet-residing species of humanity and the threat it poses to their grand scheme. And are taking steps to eradicate this infestation, this annoyance forever.

A bit lot on the overly long side. The entire trilogy is too long. A duology would have done nicely. I had to re-listen to the last three chapters, because I had run out of steam at the end and reaching the end I realized that I hadn‘t retained any of it, including the grand finale. And he follows on character arcs satisfactorily, with the resolutions actually feeling earned. Favourite characters are Olli and Kittering. Idris is really kind of a drag in this one, especially his forays into Unspace with their lengthy descriptions of what he sees and feels. My eyes glazed over a few times. Ollis‘ entire story was the most fun. I did enjoy Solace and Kris as well, although Kris only played a minor part. Too bad that she ended up so bitter at the end. Though the story has ended with Lords of Uncreation I could see the author doing other stories within the same universe, because there is so much left to discover, and I would definitely read a spin-off about Olli and her Essiel escapades, because I want to know more about these weird clam-aliens and what they actually think of the world. But overall I enjoyed the way everything was wrapped up, and I recommend the entire Final Architecture series for anyone looking for some epic space opera. Idris is supposed to be guiding the rest of the Ints and feeding data to the scientists. Mostly, he is off on his own, trying to find where the Architects live in unspace so that he can begin to understand the power that directs them to kill. With this third and final book in the Final Architecture trilogy, Adrian Tchaikovsky answers so many of the questions posed in the first two books, rising to a climatic sequence full of everything you could ever want from a Space Opera. Massive world-building effort. Loved the concept of the Eye. Crux was also a fascinating place to be. Yes, the core story is intriguing and yes, the cast of characters is pretty groovy. But the superfluous bunny-trails, the overly-frequent and unnecessary shoot-'em-up scenes, the constant conniving between factions with no resolutions, and the repeated, identical forays into Idris' weaknesses and failings (as well as the entire swaths of hand-wavium, metaphysical blather about the nature of unspace) make this feel like a nine-hour long Marvel Comics movie. It took me weeks to read a book that would normally have taken three days because I got too bored to continue. The final wound comes with the resolution: it occurs nearly in passing and is not referenced again: very unsatisfying.I am sad this trilogy has come to a conclusion. Because I have now decided it ranked higher in my estimation than the Children of Time trilogy just because of the sheer adrenaline rush it gives alone. And added to that, the characters have been outstanding from the very outset. Following their trials and tribulations has been evocative, unique and always unpredictable.

Adrian Tchaikovsky was born in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, and headed off to university in Reading to study psychology and zoology. For reasons unclear even to himself, he subsequently ended up in law. Adrian has since worked as a legal executive in both Reading and Leeds and now writes full time. He also lives in Leeds, with his wife and son. Adrian is a keen live role-player and occasional amateur actor. He has also trained in stage-fighting and keeps no exotic or dangerous pets of any kind – possibly excepting his son. Idris Telemmier, one of the last surviving Ints from the first war with the Architects, is a key to this endeavour, but he has his own plans. His modified brain allows him to reach out and touch the mind of an Architect, and he knows that what they do to the planets they destroy is forced upon them, that they are simply slaves to some greater master. Since no one else seems to think it worth trying to find these masters, Idris is scouring Unspace for them in secret. But though this complex research is being supported by factions of multiple species and would benefit the entire universe, there are still those who will see it all burn to regain power and control of the generation ships and research station.
