Abraham questions God, Sarah takes matters into her own hands, and at long last Isaac is born in Abraham’s old age. A promise fulfilled. Hope answered. Faith confirmed. Joseph Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. It often indicates a user profile. Moses runs in fear and travels across the desert to escape punishment. Here he settles down with a nomadic tribe and enjoys life for 40 years. Absolutely nothing is told to us about his thoughts or expectations during this time of his life. I cannot speak of the hope within his heart of the deliverance of his Hebrew kin, but I do know that the rest of his people were praying and begging God for a deliverer. Theirs is the true Bible story about hope in this example. As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

Stories of Hope – Heather Morris

Who Cares? exists to ask One Big Question: What hurts the most? We want to understand the pain in our local communities, and explore how the church can respond with the hope of the Gospel. The moral: You can change the world – maybe not all at once, but one person, one animal, and one good deed at a time. Wake up every morning and pretend like what you do makes a difference. It does. (Read 29 Gifts.) Story #2: The Weight of the Glass As Mary’s kayak went over the waterfall, it capsized and became pinned beneath eight to ten feet of raging water. The weight of the current pushed Mary into the front of the boat, where she could do nothing to free herself. The moral: It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries. No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day with you. If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down. (Angel and I discuss this process of letting go in the Adversity and Self-Love chapters of 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.) Story #3: Shark Bait

Mr. T is most certainly not known for being shy. And he's definitely not shy about being a Christian. But he does more than just talk about his faith – he lives it! This memoir dignifies controversial art in a way that makes me very hopeful, especially in these weird political times. Mann is unfairly gifted — not just as a photographer but as a memoirist of such poetry, fresh thinking and moral courage. This author explores her deep fear of sightlessness by studying with and teaching the blind in Nepal and India. Her students tell her that, in fact, they wouldn’t want to be any other way. This book is an extraordinary account of how what scares us most may simply be another way of being in the world. To make matters worse, Lulu has a thyroid dysfunction resulting in a lifetime battle with her weight. Food was a comfort, so matters only got worse… What is the purpose of literature?” is the question at the centre of this literary romp through books, love and contemporary American culture. Part love letter to Nicholson Baker and part secret wink at Henry James, this book manages to make literary criticism feel…sexy. This is my recommendation for anyone who’d like to feel hopeful about the future of art and critical thought.

There, he lost his father, mother, and wife to the holocaust horrors of the Nazi regime. David Sheff’s Beautiful Boy has to take its place as one of the more recent famous stories of hope. Readers of this novel have embraced this heartfelt story of addiction as a guiding light for their own lives. Chip, a contractor, and Joanna, a designer, work together to renovate old worn-down homes into something new and beautiful. But it’s not just the work they do that sets them apart… it’s the way they encourage, giggle at each other, and hug their children that make you realize that there’s something very different about this couple. And now we know their secret – the foundation of their love is Jesus Christ.Once upon a time a psychology professor walked around on a stage while teaching stress management principles to an auditorium filled with students. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?” Bauby recounts his memories and his dreams and explores the affair that split his family apart before the accident. However, the real question is whether we know what we're doing. Tom thought he'd get to know the man behind the show - that he'd separate Fred Rogers from the Mister Rogers on-camera persona. But he found there was no difference between the two. Mister Rogers was the same person when the cameras were rolling and when they weren't.
