Along the way, Tanz becomes friends with Gladys, a healer - a wonderful character I'd love to meet, and she also seems to be the only one able to get through to Caroline, one of Tanz's acting colleagues and a real prima-donna that nobody else knows how to deal with. As well as lots of Tanz-style laughs, there are some tender moments in this book, including taking Caroline for chips and the part where Tanz shares a message with Gladys which had me in tears.

The constant ‘making homosexuality a personality trait’ thing, putting all gay people into a box and stereotyping them. Insufferable Characters, especially the main character, which are mostly unnecessary. 50% of the characters could have been left out.

The Accidental Medium is the first book in a hilarious series from Tracy Whitwell featuring Tanz, the accidental medium who, with the help of the dead, is about to become an unwilling crime-solver. Screen Actors Guild Awards - Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series - nominated I really enjoyed this book and found the characters to be brilliant. Tanz is hysterical and I think everyone will find her entertaining and want to read more about her, I know I do! There are some emotional bits in the story and some creepy bits but most of all it's fun and you won’t want to put it down.

Funny, sad, spooky, entertaining, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable, I will definitely be reading the first book that I already own and I await the third with huge anticipation. The story revolves around Tanz, who's mostly failing to get work in the acting business, so she takes a job working the till at the Mystery Pot, a shop that sells crystals and similar ephemera and specialises in readings by two Mediums - Sheila and Martin. However, Tanz suddenly discovers that she, too, has some psychic abilities. For me this book fell flat. I couldn’t really connect with Tanz or the other characters associated with her.I absolutely loved this book. I needed to have a get lost in a book moment or two, so I bought the previous book The Accidental Medium. If you’re wondering, you can read them as standalone books, but they are so humorous and interesting, for the sheer escapism I’d say buy the books! There’s a little bit of everything in them.

This is the second book I've read in this series featuring Tanz, a bit-part actor who is disenchanted with the acting world and who has recently discovered she can communicate with the dead. After her exploits in The Accidental Medium, Tanz is keeping a low profile in the spirit world, but the ghosts of the past won't leave her alone. This was heading for five stars until that point. Now I feel like four might have been overly generous. In retrospect, there were a fair few avenues that were only superficially explored. This was an easy book to read and finished it one setting. The was lots of humour especially when the author describes life on a television set and quirks of the north-east. She does capture life in Newcastle accurately in her writing. The secondary characters are interesting and quirky in their own way and generally push the story. The unnecessary and way too casual talk about unhealthy eating habits and how the main character is kind of fatphobic alot. Caroline Smailes on The Accidental Medium Spooky and hilarious and brimming with oddball characters, I love this book! I enjoyed the majority of this book as the concept was interesting and it was an easy read. However, it proved to be rather problematic due to the amount of casual misogyny, transphobia, and fatphobic comments made from Tanz, the main character. Not to mention the blatant stereotyping of the gay characters and her dislike of Martin as he isn’t as ‘fabulous’ as the other gay men in her life, such as best friend Milo, who is characterised as being sassy and flamboyant. The protagonist had an air of ‘not like other girls’ about her as she constantly put down Elsa for being interested in her appearance and commented how she finds it easier to have male friends as opposed to female friends. These were common themes throughout its entirety which were very uncomfortable and annoying to read. Mandasue Heller on The Accidental Medium I loved The Accidental Medium. A hilarious journey into a ghostly world of psychics and the like that’s guaranteed to put you in high spirits. I’m no clairvoyant, but trust me, this medium is about to go large! I have to say, I'm slightly disappointed with this book. I know it had a lot to live up to, but it really didn't live up to the first book for me. I still enjoyed this one, but nowhere near as much as the first.
