Rufus Sewell as John Smith, an SS Obergruppenführer, later promoted to Oberst-Gruppenführer, and then to Reichsmarschall of the colony of North America (near series end becoming Reichsführer of a newly autonomous North American Reich) who is investigating the Resistance in New York. He is a natural-born American who had served in the US Army Signal Corps. He initially lives a comfortable suburban life with a wife and three children but subsequently moves the family to Manhattan. overall, this was very interesting from a historical and political standpoint. its definitely the type of book to make you think. but the actual storytelling aspect of the book left much to be desired. i think this could have greatly benefited from being a series rather than a standalone. oh, well. The other day, there was a thread where people were talking about works of art composed under extreme formal constraints - Perec's La Disparition, Böök's Eunoia and things like that. It's just a little odd that Man in the High Castle never gets mentioned in this context. But, when you come down to it, using the I Ching to make every decision in writing a book is an extremely strong formal constraint. Juliana, after discovering Joe’s true identity as a Nazi assassin and killing him in self-defense, travels to the High Castle to confront Hawthorne Abendsen, the author of “The Grasshopper Lies Heavy.” She is on a quest for answers, seeking to understand the significance of the book that presents an alternate reality where the Allies won World War II. Frank and Ed try to market their jewelry to Childan, who agrees only to sell their items on consignment. Ed is a poor businessman and there is no market for original American works. Childan sends one of the pieces to his customer Betty Kasoura by way of her husband, Paul, hoping to seduce her. Paul tells Childan that the piece is a true work of art that has spiritual power, and he suggests Childan try to mass-produce it for profit. However, Paul’s suggestion is merely a test to judge Childan’s character. Childan, realizing Paul’s challenge, refuses the offer, and gains a degree of the respect he desperately seeks from the Japanese.Juliana starts to socialize with the Ladies Committee as planned, and gains the support of one of its members, Lucy. Helen discovers that Thomas has been selected by the Hitler Youth group to go for an expedition in South America. She forbids her son to go until she finds out that Smith arranged to have their son disappear from society by staging a fake abduction and living a life of anonymity. Joe starts to get closer to Nicole, who reveals herself as one of the Lebensborn and brings him to meet with some of the others. After spending the night with Nicole, Joe begins to embrace his real heritage. Tagomi attempts to mend his alternate self's relationship with his family and is dismayed by the alternate Noriyuke's forgoing of the Japanese culture. Kido is informed by his right-hand man Yoshida that Abendsen's burnt hideout has been found and learns that the Yakuza is also looking for the films.
