In Katsu’s version of the story, the weary travelers are being stalked by something…and that something is ravenous. While the eerie presence of monsters is not the driving force of the story, it intensifies the general feeling of fear and paranoia that grips the migrants, as well as adding an unknown element for readers already familiar with the historical account. The Hunger is also full of the real-life difficulties that plagued the westward-bound wagon train. Humans—both through error and intent—prove to be just as dangerous as the monsters and deadly snowfall. Sharon Shinn is one of my all-time favourite authors, and I was so excited to see a new release from her! Although lighter and less complex than her usual work, this swift-moving standalone story is a great entry for any new reader; I also highly recommend Summers at Castle Auburn, which is also a standalone. I loved this was set in a cabin, or should I say an estate sized cabin, in the woods in the middle of no where with all the snow! And then you add in the creepy creatures! From there the intensity and action never stops. As you learn the truth of what pursues the group of weekend travelers, the desperation of their circumstances becomes more and more clear. If you disregard the horror tropes, this was still well-written with a creepy atmosphere, gripping side stories of other people getting absolutely mauled to death from the monsters, and you silently praying that for once, the dog makes it out alive.
