Description

The YDP-164 weighs 92.6 lbs (42 kg), which seems heavy, but is perfectly in line with other digital pianos that come with a stand and cabinet speakers.

Yamaha’s success in the music industry has certainly not been a fluke. Yamaha’s philosophy for their acoustic instruments has always been to make them sound high-quality. Headphones come in very handy when you want to practice in private, focusing solely on your playing and not disturbing others nearby. The speakers are also 2 x 10 cm, rather than the 2 x 12 cm speakers found on the YDP-164. The speakers are both 40W dual speakers, though the CLP-625 theoretically loses some of the low-end due to the difference in size. In practice, I didn’t really notice this too much. For those times where lower volume levels are needed, you need never compromise on your tone. This is thanks to the inclusion of iAC - Intelligent Acoustic Control - on the YDP-144.

About Us

While it doesn’t compare to the slimmer, more portable design of other keyboards, it’s still slim enough to fit into most apartment rooms without much hassle. Of course, if you want to use any of these two in bigger events, you will definitely need some type of amplification. But the speakers that are installed on these two pianos are bu any not under the level of their category. This type of functionality is also available on all other major brands in this price range. You can also use a feature called DUO which allows the 88-note keyboard to be electronically split into 2 44-note keyboards so that 2 people can play the same song and hearing it in the same octave. This feature is not exclusive to Yamaha and although it can be a useful feature, it also isn't used very often unless you have 2 people in the same home or a teacher-student in-home lesson or in a church, school, etc, with 2 people practicing the same song and they want to practice together at the same time hearing the same notes even though they are playing in different octaves.

This is an excellent review. It’s clear, insightful, and very informative without going beyond the understanding of a beginning student, like myself. It really helped me make some important decisions as to what I should be looking for in a new piano. I was hoping for a more advanced key action on the YDP-144. After all it has been 3 years since Yamaha launched its predecessor the YDP-143. Besides the Yamaha CFX Grand Piano sound, the manufacturers installed a Mellow Grand Piano sound. This sound is perfect for playing classical tunes. So, if you find yourself in this category, this constitutes a clear advantage of this model.Overall, I’m satisfied with the YDP-164. It’s a solid digital piano that everyone can appreciate. The only true downside is that alternatives exist and most of them provide better experiences overall. If you own a Smart Device (mobile phone or tablet) then you can expand your playing experience with the Yamaha YDP-144 even further thanks to its compatibility with the Smart Pianist app.

To access more advanced features and settings, it requires a combination of buttons and piano keys. The key action in the YDP-S54 and YDP164 are identical and that key action is called GH3 (graded weighted hammer with 3 key sensors per key). This key action in these two models have a much heavier/firmer key action touch when pressing down the keys. The force it takes to get the keys to go down is much heavier in the GH3 key action as opposed tom the GHS and heavier/firmer than all of the competition and in my opinion that is not necessarily a good thing. Too much down-weight (touch weight) when your fingers are pressing down on the keys can create fatigue in the fingers, hands, and wrists especially for young children, older people, and those people with issues with finger movement. The other brands and models in this general price range such as Kawai, Korg, Casio, and These updates came with an overhaul of the sound engine and a some other minor tweaks that enhance the overall experience. Note that to connect to an iOS device, you’ll need to rely on a Lightning-to-USB Camera adapter, or the Yamaha Wireless MIDI adapter.
