Safe to say, it’s a pretty high-tech projector, especially considering the fact that it’s short-throw. LEDs and lasers maintain a higher percentage of their initial brightness for longer. All light sources lose brightness over time, but lamps generally lose a large percentage in the first 500 hours

Bulb: Every headlight needs a bulb, and projector headlights can use halogen, HID, and LED bulbs as the light source. The bulbs in projector headlights can be much brighter than the bulbs in reflector headlights. Lasers are better still, with a similar lifespan to LED but much better brightness. However, they generally cost more too. The Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 is pricey, but it's actually a near-bargain for the image quality it delivers. Epson is known for pixel-shifting LCD projectors whose images are virtually indistinguishable from a true 4K UHD picture while using only half as many pixels on screen, thanks to lens quality and video processing. The LS12000 keeps the same emphasis on top-quality lenses and processing while boosting the pixel count to a full 3,840 by 2,160 pixels. The result is more detail than we've seen from any pixel-shifting 4K DLP projector. The best projector will have a high contrast ratio, high brightness and great color. Those are difficult to do at the same time, but as long as the balance works and it looks better than its competitors at a similar price, it's a winner. There are three kinds of light source. Bulbs, LEDs and lasers. Bulbs are the oldest and cheapest technology, but they can generate a lot of heat and bulbs will need to be replaced fairly often. The projector offers a few different viewing modes, as you would expect. Some modes are built for SDR, and others for HDR, and they honestly all looked pretty good. Projectors have a harder time at color accuracy than TVs do, unless you’re in a super dark environment and have a high quality projection surface. We tested the projector in a range of environments, but most of the testing was in fact done with the curtains drawn. That said, even with medium light, it actually did pretty well - so while it’s probably not something that could withstand direct sunlight, it does perfectly fine in most other situations.

The LSP9T excels with native 4K sources. As usual with DLP projectors, it doesn’t carry a truly native 4K resolution in the way that Sony’s SXRD projectors do. Instead it uses Texas Instruments’ ultra-fast double flashing technology to get the mirrors on its DLP chip to deliver more than a single pixel of picture for each image frame. Since they can be placed so close to the wall, these projectors don't need to be ceiling mounted. This means it's easier to connect Blu-ray players and games consoles without needing to feed wires through your walls and ceiling. The brightness is enough to contend with early evening light, something we probably wouldn’t say about a few other battery-powered rivals, and while its lumen count goes down to 600 when on battery, that’s still more than portable Nebula rivals. It’s this purity of the laser delivery, in fact, that makes the LSP9T’s pictures look even brighter in a dark room than the claimed 2,800 lumens would lead you to expect. This brightness is particularly helpful with high dynamic range sources, creating dazzling HDR images we simply haven’t seen on a projector of this price before. This holds true even with some ambient light in the room – a key achievement for a projector designed for the living room rather than a dedicated home cinema environment. Even 1080p projectors that can accept 4K UHD input handle it reasonably well. Because the higher resolution has exactly four times as many pixels as 1080p, the only loss in quality from scaling the image down will be the equivalent of a slightly soft focus. If the projector also supports HDR10 (the version of high dynamic range, or HDR, that's on discs and some streaming services, including Netflix) or HLG HDR (also supported by some streaming services), it can give you the advantage of HDR for improving image quality, even with 1080p resolution.

LG CineBeam PH30N: The LG PH30N is tiny even compared to other portable projectors, even smaller than the AAXA. It's not particularly bright, however, nor does it have built-in apps. The battery doesn't last as long as the AAXA either although it is a bit cheaper. Read our LG CineBeam PH30N review. The laser light module used for this creates crisp images, though it does ramp up the price from a non-laser long-throw model, or even regular 'short throw' which sits somewhere between the two.
