About this deal

Color-correcting concealers can target specific skin concerns. For example, green concealers diminish redness, and peach concealers diminish blueness under the eyes. Apply a color-correcting concealer first, and then apply a concealer that matches your skin tone over top. Concealer formulas Depending on what you're trying to achieve, the undertone for your concealer might be different than your foundation. For instance, if you have olive skin, your foundation might have neutral undertones, while your concealer may have peach undertones to correct for dark circles. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but creasing is natural if you yourself have creases," says Chanel. "And that’s okay! Making sure the product is evenly distributed in the crease and set with a hydrating, non-drying powder is key. However, if you don’t have under-eye creases and seem to still see some creasing in your makeup, then make sure you’re letting the product set properly before blending. And though it feels counterintuitive, use less product. An excess of product is often the reason someone who otherwise has a smooth under eye will see creasing in their concealer." To compile this list, our team of editors and contributors spent hours researching the best products on the market in this category before selecting top-rated options to put to the test in our lab facility in NYC. During our test, we evaluated each concealer based on its texture, coverage, staying power, shade range, and value. Those that impressed us the most across these attributes appear on this list. When looking for a concealer, keep in mind where and why you want to use it—under your eyes, on blemishes, to accentuate the high points of your face, or even all over your face like foundation—and how much coverage you want. If you’re like me and you want a concealer that looks great doing it all, you’ve come to the right place.

When searching for a concealer to cover under-eye circles, however, it’s better to go with a product that is a shade or two lighter than your natural skin tone. This will brighten up the area. Go with an under-eye concealer that has peach or pink tones as this will help counteract the bluish tones of dark circles. Coverage: Great coverage is a must when it comes to under-eye concealers, especially if you’re trying to mask dark circles or you're going for a full-glam look. The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer and the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Longwear Liquid Concealer both offer great full coverage. If you're looking to achieve a more natural or minimal makeup look, choose a formula that has light-to-medium buildable coverage. Cream concealers, also called pot concealers, come in a small pot and can be applied with a sponge, brush, or fingers. They are richer and creamier than liquid concealers, which means they have better coverage and work well with dry skin. However, cream concealers tend to sit heavier on the skin than liquid concealers. Apply concealer after foundation for the most natural finish. Foundation should be used to even out skin tone and concealer to spot conceal and correct discoloration under the eyes.

Concealer uses

A panelist wears swatches of the L'Oreal (left), Tarte (center left), Too Faced (center right), and Covergirl (right) concealers. When it comes to creating a fresh, wide-awake look, concealer is essential. Designed to be applied after foundationand before setting powder, its number one job is to cover under-eye circles, pimples, dark spots, and scars. But masking blemishes is far from the only thing concealer does. Shade: For undereye circles, opt for a color that's a shade or two lighter than your natural skin tone, which "will brighten up the under eye area and disguise the dark circles," says Whelan. For dark spots, look for peach undertones to neutralize the dark brown cast. To cover acne, try and match your skin tone exactly or grab a green- or yellow-tinted formula to help neutralize the redness of the spot. The most important consideration is the shade, so be sure to view the colors on an untinted screen when shopping online. In most cases, you should opt for a concealer that's one to two shades lighter than your foundation. However, celebrity makeup artist Robert Sesnek says, "If you're using concealer for blemishes, I recommend matching it to your foundation."

This concealer is a great option for anyone who struggles to find a shade that blends in well with their skin tone and is looking for a full-coverage formula. Though not ideal for people with very dry or flakey skin, the matte formula is nice for people with balanced or oily skin. That’s why it’s important that any concealer in my collection is versatile enough to cover everything I want, from a full glam look or to just reducing redness on my cheeks or darkness under my eyes on “no-makeup makeup” days. The RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up Concealer ( available at Sephora) certainly was lightweight (as promised), but that meant it didn’t cover anything despite multiple layers. It was also too emollient to stay in place.

Dry or mature: If you have dry or mature skin, a radiant concealer is best. Matte products tend to be drying on the skin, and a bit of shine will give you a healthy glow. Moisturize before you apply concealer. That way the concealer won’t cling to any dry patches, especially under the eyes. There are a lot of things we love about this fan-favorite dark circle concealer. The price is affordable, the applicator is designed specifically for under-eye circles, and the formula is lightweight and buildable. During our test, we were impressed that it was crease-resistant, non-drying, and made the under-eye area look smooth and bright. Although the sponge-tip applicator isn't ideal for actually blending the product, the shape is awesome for placing concealer under the eyes as well as in areas of the face to highlight. The workable formula and rounded applicator combo also make it easy to contour if you buy a shade that's a bit darker than your complexion. Because the formula isn't super drying or overly emollient and oily, we think this is an excellent concealer for all skin types. One light layer can be used to yield medium coverage on a daily basis, while a second layer can be added for more coverage that suits full-glam makeup. Some concealers work best under the eyes, while others are better for concealing blemishes. Many concealers can multitask, or you can buy two different concealers to target each area. If I had to use only one makeup product for the rest of my life, I would choose concealer every single time. As someone who is prone to acne scarring, has chronic dark circles and spends a lot of time trying to minimise her uneven skin tone, it's safe to say I rely heavily on concealer. Considering I don't really wear foundation, I use concealer in a myriad of ways. Not only does it disguise my under-eye bags, eradicate any signs of breakouts and cover up any redness, but it also works to even out my skin in a way that just leaves me feeling better about myself. Like the Tarte Shape Tape, its larger doe-foot applicator deposits plenty of concealer onto the skin for a full-coverage look. However, it can easily be thinned out and blended into the skin on lighter makeup days.

The Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Concealer ( available at Sephora) creased right away and settled into all of my fine lines—hardly “flawless.”In my mind, the right concealer is versatile enough to blend smoothly over your under-eye area without settling into fine lines. It should also cover up a pimple without clinging to any dry patches around it. Regardless of how much coverage it offers, I want it to blend seamlessly for a natural finish. A great concealer looks equally amazing as a thin layer that lets your skin show through, or when creating a blank canvas for makeup. Wear: How does the concealer hold up when you go through your normal makeup routine? Did the concealer stay on and stay effective throughout the day? How comfortable was it to wear the concealer throughout the day? Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser ( available at Target) comes in a tube with a sponge-tipped applicator. That makes application messier and seemingly less hygienic. Despite CoverGirl offering the same quantity of colors as Tarte, this shade range could use an extra option in the tan and deep categories. There are eight shades in the light and medium categories, and seven shades in the tan and deep ones. Additionally, it would be easier to choose a shade if the names were reminiscent of the undertones, like Tarte’s. Still, our panelists felt that they received shades close enough to create a cohesive makeup look. Our main tester began using Tarte as part of full-coverage makeup to cover up acne scarring. She still loves it, even as her preferences have shifted to more natural makeup. A little bit goes a long way. You can get full coverage with a single swipe of the larger doe-foot applicator.
