About this deal

stars, rounded down because this was one of my most anticipated books of 2021 and I'm super disappointed. Opening his eyes, he wiped the ocean spray from his pale face with his sleeve, the fabric soft against his cheeks. He hooked a finger in his collar and tugged, hoping to relieve the pressure at his throat from the gathered fabric. It didn’t work.

The fourth child of five, Tal was accustomed to being teased, but now at sixteen he had a sinking feeling he’d always be coddled by his three older siblings. The trio were all set in their royal roles, while Tal’s remained uncertain. His sister, Isa, was the eldest and next in line to be queen. Garrett was the head of their kingdom’s navy. His other brother, Kest, was a renowned scholar. Tal ran to the railing, prepared to jump after, but Garrett grabbed him around the middle. “No. Tal, no,” he said as Tal struggled in his arms. I think Lukens used pop culture references in their stories, like small seeds; here "mermaids" vibes, & in their other book, "Merthur" & building their world & plot around the concept, however changed it so they're not exactly a retelling, & only had the vibes. The characters are also super disappointing! I know they're young (16) but can't we please get just an ounce of character development? I don't want to go into spoilers but the only development just felt painfully cliché and honestly, badly brought up.When we get to the port, and after you tell us about the gold and the ship.” Athlen narrowed his eyes. “Here,” Tal said, offering a skin of water. Maybe a show of kindness would allow Athlen to relax. “Are you injured?” Tal opened his mouth, then shut it, unsure of how to respond. He rubbed his hand over his face. “It’s not…” Tal crossed his arms, wrong-footed. “I’m not… there hasn’t been…” The overall enjoyment level of In Deeper Waters is very high. It took a little while for me to be fully engrossed in the story, but once I got into it, the book was immensely enjoyable! All in all, this novel is an exceptionally refreshing read that’s perfect for spring! It’s the epic high fantasy you’ve been waiting for! Prince Tal has long awaited his coming-of-age tour. After spending most of his life cloistered behind palace walls as he learns to keep his forbidden magic secret, he can finally see his family's kingdom for the first time. His first taste of adventure comes just two days into the journey, when their crew discovers a mysterious prisoner on a burning derelict vessel.

The world-building is very basic. We are given enough information to understand the politics between Tal's kingdom and the other kingdoms, and to be able to imagine what the setting looks like, but not much more. I broke the fetter. He said he’d tell us about the gold and the ship if we freed him. He told me how the ship was destroyed beforehand.” Garrett’s expression remained unchanged. “He’s been adrift for three days,” Tal continued, feeling the inexorable need to justify himself, to reassure Garrett of his decisions and his use of magic. “He needs food and water and—” What secrets are Athlen hiding? Will they help Tal or put him in more danger? Can Tal warn his family about what is happening before war breaks out? And can two very different young men from two different walks of life find happiness? There are lots of obstacles to overcome.Don's wife Kelly tells Vic that her husband and Melinda have been accusing him of Charlie's murder. Vic discovers they have hired a private investigator to follow him and confronts Don in front of Don's family. Melinda reconnects with an old boyfriend, Tony, and Vic overhears their conversation suggesting they will move to Brazil, taking Trixie with them. She invites Tony to dinner with Vic and takes him to her bedroom, furthering Vic's jealousy. Setting sail on his coming-of-age tour—under the watchful eyes of his naval commander elder brother and a diligent bodyguard—is equal parts thrilling and overwhelming. Those feelings intensify when they come across a derelict ship with a cute yet strange boy chained up inside. This was such a cute story!!! Sweet, beautiful, just ADORABLE!!!😍😍 Picture a much better version of The Little Mermaid where the prince is magic and the little mermaid is actually a little merman, and he is much, much better.

And he’s a merman. That’s right. A merman. I legit thought this was a prince-pirate romance. But it’s not. Despite Garrett’s continued questions, they didn’t learn anything else from Athlen. Minutes dragged by until Shay returned with a shirt and an ax. She tossed the shirt to Athlen, and he stared at it before pulling it over his head. Tal covered Athlen’s hand with his own and removed it from his arm. He shouldn’t. His magic wasn’t meant for frivolous things. Garrett was right, though. Athlen was terrified. He was angry. He was a victim, and the iron around his ankle was a reminder. Tal could do this for him. He should do this for him. This journey was about learning to make decisions, and this would be his first one. He would use his magic for a good deed. That spiked Tal’s interest more than a piece of pristine gold. He shrugged off Garrett’s heavy arm and stepped forward. “I’m not sensitive. I’m a prince of Harth, same as Garrett, and I will decide what I see and what I don’t.” Now, he’s been allowed to partake in the kingdom’s traditional coming-of-age tour, and travel throughout the kingdom with his older brother and the family’s bodyguard. But not long into the journey they find a burning ship and a mysterious prisoner, Athlen, with whom Tal feels an immediate connection. Athlen convinces Tal to free him, only to watch him jump overboard into the ocean.

There’s more,” Shay said, shifting slightly. Shay was the royal house’s most stalwart soldier. She’d followed Garrett into skirmishes and squalls, protected Tal as a child, and earned a seat at the royal table with her unerring bravery. To see her unsettled twisted Tal’s stomach even more. “There is something you should come see.” Her gaze cut to Tal and she stopped short, her eyes narrowing. “You should come as well, Your Highness.” That’s close enough.” Garrett’s commanding voice stopped Athlen’s advance but didn’t release Tal from his scrutiny. In fact, Athlen stared, eyebrows drawn, more curious than scared. I didn’t really have prior knowledge of the plot going in—I simply loved the themes hinted to in the synopsis and had major heart-eyes for that book cover. To be honest, I think a limited knowledge of the story probably worked in my favour, as I was able to be wowed and excited as the action and romance unfolded. Eugene Damblans’ illustration for the French Petit Journal shows German “barbarity” as U boat sailors shoot the fishermen of a torpedoed sardine trawler out of the rigging (May 1917)

Tal hated the sea. He hated this trip. He hated that his older brother would tease him endlessly if he found him retching over the side. Unlike Tal, his siblings, or Athlen the antagonists did not get the benefit of nuanced character development. There were hints of interesting things roiling under their surfaces, but because the novel centered on Tal, the readers only saw what little the antagonists cared to show him. And they don’t care to show him (or us) much until too close to the end. It also has the unintended side effect of making the ending feel rushed. The synopsis of "In Deeper Waters" sounded very promising, and I’m happy to report that the story really held up! It was easy to understand, and the world building was done incredibly well. There was no info dumping, nor was it written vaguely. The adventure was such a fun time too. I adored every minute of it!
