About this deal

The hinges look shiny at first, but as one user pointed out in my Legion 5 15” review, it’s because they are coated in plastic film. You can choose to leave this if you want to preserve them for whatever reason. Removing it is kind of a pain in the butt because it requires opening and closing the lid multiple times to get to it all.

The closest alternatives to the Legion 5 Pro 16 at the moment are the Dell G16 and the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 each with similar 165 Hz refresh rate and H-series CPU options. The Asus model is significantly smaller and lighter, but it runs even warmer and is just as loud. Meanwhile, the Dell model runs quieter but its size and core temperatures are slightly warmer and heavier than the already warm and heavy Lenovo. Finally, here’s how things change when I swapped out the default RAM for my 32GB RAM kit. Note that this is with the GPU OC as well: We also run a custom Adobe Photoshop image-editing benchmark. Using an early 2018 release of the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop, we apply a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image, timing each operation and adding up the total. As with Handbrake, lower times are better here. The Photoshop test stresses the CPU, storage subsystem, and RAM, but it can also take advantage of most GPUs to speed up the process of applying filters, so systems with powerful graphics chips or cards may see a boost. measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs while Fire Strike is more demanding and made for high-end PCs to strut their stuff. The results are proprietary scores. Paired with this hardware is 16GB of RAM, which comes in 2 modules of 8GB and is replaceable. If you’re wanting to get the most out of your PC, you’re probably going to want to replace this RAM though, as it’s the same single ranked RAM I saw in the Legion 5 and Legion 5 Pro. We’ll get into the performance differences shortly.

The mids and highs sound just ok, but the bass is limited to as low as 100Hz. Even so, the sound is decent for movie streaming or watching Youtube. Just don’t expect your favorite song to sound like it does on some quality headphones or speakers. Regardless of what screen size you’re looking for, even if you’re just shopping for a new gaming laptop in general, I think the Legion 5 Pro is a good option right now. I believe the overall value is just spot on. Can’t really think of a better way to put it really.

The only weakness in this keyboard is the flex in the chassis. I did notice quite a bit of flex, particularly around the D and F keys. It’s probably because I strike there the hardest. It doesn’t interrupt how well I type, but it is annoying to see(especially if you’re the type to look at your hands while typing). The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List. The screen is ok on this model. It’s bright enough and has decent contrast. The viewing angles are also good, although there is a little bit of light shift when you hit the moderate angles. It’s not distracting at all when looking at it head-on. The screen refresh rate is 165Hz, which to me is more than enough speed for productivity and most gaming needs. Especially paired with a 3070, I think this is a good balance of refresh rate. You can also switch it to 60Hz if you wanted to save on some battery life a little. And here’s how this 2021 Legion 5 fares in the Cinebench R15 loop test on the Performance, Balanced and Quiet profiles.I can’t exactly fault Lenovo for this either, as it appears to be an industry standard. Andrei found the same issue on an Asus unit, and I’m sure it was the same thing for the Alienware m15 I just had, as it shares the exact same RAM as Jarrod had in his video. So no matter where you look, you’ll probably be facing the same potential upgrade dilemma. I also ran the in-game benchmark of Rainbow Six: Siege using the Low and Ultra presets (both at 100% render resolution) at 1080p. The Legion 5 Pro averaged 316fps in Low and 262fps in Ultra, which should raise the eyebrows of esports athletes looking for a capable gaming laptop at an approachable price. This would keep the 165HZ screen on offer here well filled with frames. Battery Rundown Test Another added feature to this panel is the fast response time. You have to turn it on though. In Lenovo Vantage, there’s a toggle called Overdrive that will lower the response time to 3ms when turned on. I have no idea what it is with it off, but it is noticeable on fast-paced games for sure. You’ll probably just want to leave it on if you game a lot.

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility. What really stood out to me was the peak brightness, being so close to 500 nits. This made a big difference when using the laptop next to a bright window. I still don’t think it’s enough to battle glare from direct sunlight, but I don’t use my laptop outside much anyway. The synthetic tests above are helpful for measuring general 3D aptitude, but it's hard to beat full retail video games for judging gaming performance. Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are both modern, high-fidelity titles with built-in benchmarks that illustrate how a system handles real-world video games at various settings. We run them at the games' moderate and maximum graphics quality presets (Normal and Ultra for Far Cry 5, Medium and Very High for Rise of the Tomb Raider) at 1080p resolution. Far Cry 5 is DirectX 11-based, while we flip Rise of the Tomb Raider to DX12. Finally, these are my results in Performance mode only with my 32GB Ram kit installed. The RAM is 2400Mhz 2RX8 Kingston HyperX : The Legion 5 Pro has an 80Whr battery, which is a pretty decent size. Judging from the inside, it doesn’t look like they had any more room for something bigger either. Limits:Limit 5 per customer. Offers valid from Lenovo in the US only. Lenovo may increase or decrease these limits, from time to time, for certain offerings.
