Pioneer DJ DM-40 Speakers Review - Digital DJ Tips Pioneer DJ DM-40 Speakers Review - Digital DJ Tips

If you are hard-pressed to invest more into your monitoring system, then you can rest assured that the DJ DM 40s will still be impressive for your DJ practice, and casual listening. We would also like to make clear that it is also entirely possible to produce music on sonically inaccurate speakers. Pioneer is a company that has gathered a lot of reverence throughout the years. Their flagship gear is known to be the cream of the crop when it comes to delivering excellent audio quality DJ equipment. The DM 40 Pioneer DJ’s speakers are front-ported, which minimizes the problematic crisp sound quality reflection issues of putting them too close to a rear wall. They are not as lightweight as they may seem, but that is indeed beneficial. Many of the low-tier cabinets are made out of plastic, whereas the DM 40 speaker cabinets are made out of wood. This is a nice surprise at the low price point. Wood helps to stabilize the cone movement, thus making for a tighter sonic punch. Anecdotally, people also say that over time the tone of a wooden cabinet improves. We tested the Pioneer monitors in a small studio, where we had already performed an acoustic measurement, and based on the results, the acoustic treatment was also done. On the walls were printed sound-absorbing panels depicting instruments and parametric diffusers in a rather modern style. In a music studio, perfect musical piece of work can only be made if the acoustics of the place are properly treated with the right acoustic elements. Our only advise regarding the speaker is to take care when handling and moving the DM-40. Because the speaker uses a soft dome tweeter and doesn’t feature speaker grills it can be easy to dent, ruining not only the look but the sound of the speaker. DM-40 Sound Quality

Pioneer Corporation, commonly referred to as Pioneer, is a Japanese multinational company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, that specialises in producing digital entertainment products. The company was founded by Nozomu Matsumoto in 1938 in Tokyo as a radio and speaker repair workshop. Current CEO is Susumu Kotani. Features The specially engineered ducts cut down on impediments and produce a clean, grand, low-end oomph regardless of your volume levels. Class AB Amplifiers These are especially helpful when placing your audio setup on a table because the table can act as a speaker extension itself. While these speakers are reasonably compact, they’re not tiny, and they’re not particularly light, either: Some speakers down at this end of the market are smaller, and other lighter, being made predominantly of plastic, but the Pioneer DJ DM-40s have a reassuring wooden construction and weight to them. This usually translates to better sound quality, because the cabinet remains still as the speaker cones move to produce the sound. The speakers are also front ported, meaning there’s a slot in the front of each to allow air to move in and out of the unit for a fuller bass.Related: PIONEER DDJ-400 DJ Controller Pioneer DM-40 Speaker Details: features DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY: For a small speaker, the DM-40 sound simply superb and punch harder than their small footprint would suggest. The included convex diffusers use DECO technology from Pioneer’s sister brand TAD audio. The afore mentioned diffuser helps spread the high frequencies. Ensuring wide, even coverage around the room, reducing the need to sit directly in front the speaker to achieve the best listening experience.

Having the speakers play on low volume, yet still thump is pretty neat. It keeps things exciting and makes you want to keep playing, moving, and grooving. When it comes to how it’s built, this speaker feels solid and firm. The speaker has a beautiful crescent diffuser to lead the high frequencies that nest around the bass driver. Furthermore, this speaker has two ports in the front. These ports ensure that you can mount the speaker next to a wall without effect. However, they are not suited for professional applications. In the case that you enjoy or need your studio monitors to accurately represent soundscapes, then you should consider investing a little more money into your audio system. With built-in Bluetooth connectivity, you can connect your smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC or other device – wirelessly. Featuring support for Qualcomm aptX and AAC, the speakers let you enjoy wireless music in high quality formats. According to Pioneer, this helps the DM 40 speakers achieve its impressively low-distortion at higher volumes. First Impressions / Setting Up

Pioneer DM-40

The DM 40’s come in a pretty small size factor. They aren’t so tiny and light that this would be a selling point, but the speakers sure won’t crowd your room.

You can always trust that any product from Pioneer always comes with fantastic design and high-quality build Quality. The first thing you might notice about this speaker is that it has curved front edges that are not just for beauty. The amplifiers in the DJ DM 40 speakers are designed to ensure minimal levels of low distortion, even when cranking the volume. The tweeters and woofers are both aligned with each other so that there is no crossover between them. Subtle in design, the moulded front panel visually looks very professional with a crescent diffuser moulded just below the tweeter. The diffuser not only looks great but helps direct the high frequencies around the bass driver. The speaker delivers a more equal sound to a wider area as a result. The Bluetooth module included on the DM-40 is simply for easier casual listening. Making the DM-40 an easier speaker to live with day to day, the inclusion of Bluetooth broadens the speakers appeal. Although we regularly used the Bluetooth connection with our phones and laptop we found the physical analogue cable sounded slightly better. As a beginner DJ, you'd benefit greatly from this speaker, depending on where you intend to use it. If you need something for gigs, you should go with a more prominent speaker unless the gig requires you to play in a small, enclosed space. The reason is, this speaker works best as a studio speaker. It is the perfect replacement for computer speakers. Truthfully, the bass isn’t excellent, but it's not bad either. But you would only appreciate it when you play it alongside a speaker that functions in a similar capacity as this speaker. It would fill up a small, enclosed space. Nevertheless, the bass is still punchy, warm, and deep enough for beginner DJs. The DM 40s come with two-meter long audio cables, power leads, and some foam cushions that act as miniature isolation pads. Pioneer DJ know their ways around the dance world, and this knowledge seems to have seeped into building the DJ DM 40 speakers.
