Marianne Cirone: Her book is exactly like that. She even mentioned, in her book, that she read your book and she was like, “And I was happy to realize that I did all nine steps.” Kelly Turner is a psychotherapist who specializes in integrative oncology. She has a master’s degree in social work in the field of counseling for cancer patients. During her PhD work, she studied spontaneous healing, which she calls “radical remission”. ALSO want to add that if you are not familiar with channeled messages, you may want to steer clear of chapter 8 regarding John in Brazil since you may not be able to understand the whole picture. If you understand the difference between the messenger and the host, you will greatly enjoy how many people were helped by the entity speaking through the John guy. Dr. Turner’s book summarizes the results of her research: interviews with one hundred cancer survivors and analysis of now over one thousand cases of people who experienced a radical remission. The survivors Dr. Turner talked to were those who, because of the type and/or stage of their cancer, were considered by conventional medicine unlikely to heal from it — yet, despite all odds, they had. Another thing I wasn't fond of was the author's decision to soften the outlandishness of John of God's healing methods by using carefully chosen words. Though many online articles refer to him succinctly as a "psychic surgeon", the author described John of God as having "the ability to leave his body and go into a trance, thereby allowing the spirit of a higher being to enter his body and perform energetic healing work." (p. 237)

There is no need to list the studies on social support, having a spiritual connection, or having a strong reason for living. Again, few would argue that these areas are unimportant. But they are not sufficient explanations for cancer, nor can they be seen as validated treatments. How can we make sense of these explanations? Radical Remission offers practical tips for how to make such changes, whether you’re dealing with cancer or trying to prevent it. Let me say again that nobody is suggesting that cancer patients shouldn’t get conventional medical treatment. But let’s not stop there. Let’s do everything we can to optimize the chance for cure by combining conventional treatment with the kinds of mind-body approaches I share in Mind Over Medicine and Dr. Turner shares in Radical Remission. With this kind of Whole Health approach, we can rest easy, knowing that we’ve done everything possible to optimize health outcomes. Marianne Cirone: I’m working with someone who is writing a memoir. I’m helping her edit it, and she had a terminal lymphoma diagnosis and then a breast cancer diagnosis, and she’s totally fine now, 15 years later. Her account cites many examples of people who pursued non-standard therapies and beat cancer. One of the most moving is the case of Shin Terayama, a kidney cancer patient who was released to go home because there was no possibility of remission. He claims to have cured himself through a combination of breath work, a simplified diet, fasting, purified water, and sending love to his cancerous tumors. He was cancer free for over 25 years. In another example, Nancy’s doctor recommended a standard therapy of full mastectomy, radiation and tamoxifen. She chose instead a regime of diet, exercise, herbs, emotional spiritual and energy treatments. She was still cancer-free 18 years later. At a time when psycho-oncology has come to the forefront of conventional oncology care, and when evidence-based integrative therapies are appearing in leading medical journals, Dr. Turner’s work could not come at a more opportune time. Dr. Turner’s unique and exemplary skill set: being a psychotherapist who then trained in social science research, and is a yoga teacher, has made her an ideal candidate for formulating, conducting and presenting this very timely research for the scientific community, as well as for creating an easily digestible format for the general public.

The Books | Radical Remission Project

First, if you are the kind of person who absolutely never believes in ghosts, don't even try to read this book. There are no ghosts here, but for this book to even be readable, you have to be open to the idea that something might possibly, could be real, even if it defies all reason and there's no scientific explanation. You don't have to buy into alternative medicine, or believe in the paranormal, to get something positive out of this book, but you do need to take everything with a grain of salt. While I very much enjoyed this book, I would have liked to know that there were objective differences between those who did and did not experience remission. This is really a book about how people make meaning of their unlikely survival. I am sure many people who don't experience remissions do similar things in an effort to prolong their survival. Therefore, it's still hard to know what the difference is between those who do and don't go into remission. What it due to the behaviors and practices outlined in the book? There is no way to know this. The implication is that what these people did made a positive difference (though the author tries to explain that her methods don't support such assumptions), but I am ambivalent about the implied message. Another problem with Turner’s data is its limited size. Although she conducted over a hundred interviews, she is dealing with only a small number of respondents (she doesn’t state the exact number) who have experienced radical remission. In contrast, the number of cancer sufferers is vast—the National Cancer Institute states that 1.8 million new diagnoses were made in the US, and 600,000 died from cancer in a single year, 2020, a rate equal to 442.4 people per 100,000. In addition in 2020 there were 16.9 million cumulative cancer survivors living in the US. And worldwide there will be 29.5 million new cancer cases per year by 2040. On a societal level cancer’s scale is impossible to ignore yet its scale makes it difficult to comprehend. In this light a few hundred or even a thousand radical remission exceptions are not very meaningful. If studying Traditional Chinese Medicine and learning about the meridian system, auras, and chakras interests you. However, this book isn’t just for those dealing with cancer, but can apply to many health issues. Reading through these stories and the common traits that these survivors practiced - what I got out of this book isn’t just about fighting illness, but more about a blueprint of strategies to incorporate into ones life.
