By the time the credits rolled after my 20-hour playthrough, I was pleasantly captivated by RoboCop: Rogue City. Its well-written story kept me engaged, the investigation segments provided interesting and rewarding diversions, and the combat system was satisfying to indulge in. To be clear, I'm not saying RoboCop should be wandering around Detroit shouting ACAB. Rather, in its strive to mimic the anti-corporate satire of the film, Rogue City misses an opportunity to ask other, more pertinent questions, like how does a cop programmed to follow the letter of the law fit within a policing system that itself often doesn't? Throughout, the game asks whether a robot is fit to do a policeman's job, which only works as a debating topic if your audience accepts the police are doing the job well in the first place, a point that Rogue City glosses over. There's one moment in Rogue City where an experienced officer accuses a rookie of being an OCP spy and threatens to hit him. As RoboCop, you can point out that doing so would be illegal, whereupon the officer accuses you of being in league with OCP because you called him out, because you stepped off the tribal line. These are the kinds of tensions you could build something genuinely new out of, but Rogue City never really interrogates them. The whole time I was playing RoboCop: Rogue City for this review, throwing motorcycles into street thugs or gunning them down using the iconic Auto 9 pistol, I couldn’t help but imagine how blown the minds of those who grew up with the original 1987 movie would be. Seeing this gritty, cyberpunk version of Detroit beautifully rendered using Unreal Engine 5 is a real treat, and well beyond the sort of game tech at the time would have been capable of. Such brilliant execution is only matched by how well developer Teyon has captured the sense of the character, never depicting RoboCop as someone who can run, jump or mantle, but rather as the hulking tank of a law enforcer he is. It makes for a unique-feeling shooter - a game that can often feel very basic, tired, repetitive and old-hat, chiefly because it is all of these things - 100%. It's all very dated and has no real surprises up its sleeve; it's got weird uncanny valley NPCs, linear missions, a bunch of very run-of-the-mill guns and some of the worst grenades in the grenade business. If you don't care about RoboCop. If you are a fan though, there's something more here. There's immaculate recreations of some of the movie's most famous locations, lots of old characters make cameos, Peter Weller reprises his iconic role (enough to sell the most ardent fans) and the writing is absolutely on the money.
