About this deal

Despite the flavor upgrades, Scum and Villainy is really good at giving players what they want. It’s got all the tropes your group will expect when they think of space opera: laser blasts, alien monsters, even psychic powers. However, there’s one glaring hole in this list: rules for buying a better ship. All of these developments are codified into the mechanics, so the GM doesn’t have sole responsibility for remembering everything. The PCs and their ship cannot help but change from one session to another, which is a great way to simulate the changing characters we all know and love from our favorite scifi stories. The only downside is that Scum is so focused on development that it can be hard to play as a oneshot. The system’s balance is thrown completely out of alignment if the players no longer have to worry about the long-term consequences of their actions. Ship Stats Create Confusion

Scum and Villainy - Evil Hat Productions

The MA-9 Frontline Droids cost one token. They switch their target regularly and then jet towards it. They do a lot of damage and are due to their threat-drop pretty annoying. One of the things I critiqued Blades in the Dark for was its setting. That game is heavily focused on steampunk street gangs, which creates a problem: by default, the setting is incredibly dark because the PCs’ entire business model is profiting off of human misery. PCs already have a habit of pulling stories in a dark direction, so starting with such a dark premise can result in an entire party of serial killers. That’s fine for groups who like their roleplaying extra grim, but anyone else has to fight the setting to create a lighter story. The author discusses his upcoming book, which features three generations of police case files from across the Star Wars saga. The first team is Red Patrol. Everyone must turn right at the start to get to them. The second team is Green Patrol on stairs. Gold Patrol, the third team, is inside the cantina. The last team is Blue Patrol.Alliance Meter: Each faction has a status meter for the player crew that ranges from −3 to +3. The book recommends running one last job once they reach +3 with a faction, while the Firedrake ship has a special ability that gives bonuses when the crew reaches −3 with the Hegemony. The warlords are rivals and hope only one will live to finish you off and control all of the armies. When only two are remaining, if both of them are reduced to 50% health, they will become enraged in an attempt to defeat you. StarWars.com: The conceit that the book is culled from the files of a familial line of police officers is really fun and pretty unique for a Star Wars book. How did you land on that?

Neglectful Precursors: The Ur are an extinct species whose extremely advanced technologies still puzzle the modern science.

A Key Option Is Missing

The factions lend themselves towards different styles of campaigns. For example, there are rival mercenaries and assassins for bounty hunting PCs, renegade Imperial legionaries and the local imperial legion for rebellious PCs, and lots of shady groups that want something moved under the noses of the people that are the established rulers of the sector. Changing the Game This problem is to be expected in successor games like Scum. While it would be nice for new designers to take on the tasks of correcting their predecessor’s mistakes, it saves a lot of time and energy to simply use what worked before, warts and all. With RPG publishing being such a difficult industry, I can’t blame Scum’s designers for taking this route, even if I grumble at having to treat the simplest rolls as a prolonged negotiation. In short, if the system’s flaws didn’t put you off in Blades, they won’t put you off in Scum. This is a 1 second cast (5 seconds in Story and Hard Mode) which one-shots the tank unless it is cheesed. In Blades in the Dark, the party chooses what type of gang they are, and that choice introduces special rules that make the group better at doing the kind of work they specialize in. This same concept is present in Scum and Villainy, but instead of choosing a type of criminal gang, the group chooses a specific type of ship. The options included in this chapter include: Loan Shark: The crew can only keep up to four CRED on their ship, and if they want more, they have to take a loan — at a 100% interest rate. If they cannot pay on time, the lender will send increasingly dangerous bounty hunters after them.
