In the words of Dotmusic, "Space's idiosyncratic pop sensibility coupled with Gut's marketing approach has proved to be a winning combination." [31] The label was used to "working with acts that don't necessarily seek to conform", and, having started life as a plugging company, "its reputation in this field has helped to harness Radio One support for the singles and secure TV appearances on shows such as Chris Evans' TFI Friday". [31] Due to the small size of Gut, the entire label's staff "[pulled] out all stops" for the album. [31] Guy Holmes, managing director of Gut, was pleased with the album's success; in late 1996 he stated "it's been brilliant, absolutely fantastic. It's all about building a band properly without any hype and letting the records speak for themselves. With 120,000 albums sold, what more can you say?" [31] The abdomen has no appendages except those that have been modified to form one to four (usually three) pairs of short, movable spinnerets, which emit silk. Each spinneret has many spigots, each of which is connected to one silk gland. There are at least six types of silk gland, each producing a different type of silk. [13] Spitting spiders also produce silk in modified venom glands. [37]Bambarger, Bradley (8 March 1997). "The Modern Age". Billboard. Vol.109, no.10. p.63 . Retrieved 22 November 2016. Selden, P.A. This failure long nagged at Paula Cushing of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, who participated in the planning of the spider experiment. When the opportunity for a similar experiment on board the ISS cropped up again in 2011, the researcher got Dr. Samuel Zschokke of the University of Basel involved to prepare and analyze the new attempt. This time, the experiment started with four spiders of the same species ( Trichonephila clavipes): two flew to the ISS in separate habitats, two stayed on Earth in separate habitats and were kept and observed under identical conditions as their fellows traveling in space -- except that they were exposed to terrestrial gravity. Although the fossil record of spiders is considered poor, [84] almost 1000 species have been described from fossils. [85] Because spiders' bodies are quite soft, the vast majority of fossil spiders have been found preserved in amber. [85] The oldest known amber that contains fossil arthropods dates from 130million years ago in the Early Cretaceous period. In addition to preserving spiders' anatomy in very fine detail, pieces of amber show spiders mating, killing prey, producing silk and possibly caring for their young. In a few cases, amber has preserved spiders' egg sacs and webs, occasionally with prey attached; [86] the oldest fossil web found so far is 100million years old. [87] Earlier spider fossils come from a few lagerstätten, places where conditions were exceptionally suited to preserving fairly soft tissues. [86]

Spiders in space: Without gravity, light becomes key to

Space pursued an eclectic sound dubbed "queasy listening" by critics, [1] embracing electronica and sampling in their work and drawing from genres as diverse as hip hop, techno, post-punk, ska, lounge music, easy listening and film scores, the result of the differing tastes between band members. The group were also noted for their deliberately tongue-in-cheek, dark humoured lyrics inspired by films, which frequently deal with topics such as serial killers, failed relationships, social outcasts, and mental illness. [2] Whilst Space's eclecticism and camp humour polarised listeners and critics, they have maintained a devoted cult following. What to look for: This species can be confused with many other UK species. Their body is dark brown, with variable patterns on their abdomen. Usually cream and dark brown marks that can sometimes resemble a skull. Upon release, the album peaked at #5 on the UK Albums Chart in September 1996, [6] and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry in December 1996. [5] "Spiders" peaked at #133 in Australia, [7] #45 in New Zealand in May 1997, [8] and #35 in Finland. [9] " Money", " Kill Me", " Neighbourhood", " Female of the Species", " Me and You Versus the World" and " Dark Clouds" (the first two combined as a double A-side) were released as singles, though the former was re-recorded for the album. It sold an estimated 800,000 copies between 1996 and 1998. [10] The album received critical acclaim upon release, with critics praising its unique sound and lyrics, and has featured in polls of the best albums of all time. Cangialosi, K.R. (1990). We wouldn't have guessed that light would play a role in orienting the spiders in space," says Zschokke, who analyzed the spider experiment and published the results with his colleagues in the journal Science of Nature. "We were very fortunate that the lamps were attached at the top of the chamber and not on various sides. Otherwise, we would not have been able to discover the effect of light on the symmetry of webs in zero gravity."
